TCDD, 1,2,3,7,8-pentachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin, and 1,2,3,4,7,8-hexachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin, all of which were shown to be effective blockers of ovulation in this assay (Gao et al. 1999, 2000). The mixture was administered at TCDD-TFQ doses ranging from 0.0038 to 0.0303 mg/kg. Parallel dose-response relationships for inhibition of ovulation were found for the individual agents and for the equipotent mixture. This finding is consistent with the hypothesis that the agents in the tested mixture are likely to block ovulation by additive joint action in a similar mechanism and supports the use of the TEF approach for this type of endocrine disruption. Another PCB congener, 2,2, 4,4 -tetraCB (which has no detectable Ah receptor agonist activity), was inactive at the dose examined in this assay (41.9 mg/kg). The effect of its presence in a mixture with effective components, however, was not studied (Gao et al. 2000). [Pg.448]

A comparison of the various surface treatments is presented in Table V. The resin used was methylenedianiline cured at high temperature. All of the joints were polished with 600 grit emery cloth and treated with ammonium citrate, with the exception of the control and sand blasted joints. Sandblasting the surface increases the surface area and provides a means of mechanical interlocking of the adhesive with the substrate surface. This does improve the water durability to some extent, but the effect is small when compared to the results achieved with the coupling agents. Adhesives and Sealants. Most industrial adhesives contain surface active components and additives, and air entrainment during their mechanical appHcation can significantly reduce joint strength. Defoamers are usually formulated into adhesives to protect users against such difficulties. Additional benefits, such as improved uniformity of products, increased throughput and reduced labor costs can also result from the use of defoamers during adhesive appHcation. The developments in the treatment of RA are tempered by the lack of evidence describing the long-term safety and efficacy of the BRMs. In addition, the cost associated with the medications can be a deterrent to use. Long-term data are needed to determine if patients receiving BRM therapy early in the course of disease have reduced disease activity, reduced joint deformities and disability, improved quality of life, and continued function as productive members of society. Cost analyses of long-term data may indicate that the increased expenses associated with BRMs are offset by the costs avoided for the treatment of advanced RA. [Pg.875]

It is unclear whether the myopathy was a direct toxic effect of chlordecone on the muscle or whether the myopathy was a consequence of neuronal dysfunction.
