The activated carbon adsorbent used to produce these data is produced from coal. The common commercial adsorbents are activated carbon produced from either coal or coconut shell. 

The removal of volatile organic compounds (VOC) from air is most often accompHshed by TSA. Air streams needing treatment can be found in most chemical and manufacturing plants, especially those using solvents. It was not nndl the 1950s that detonation flame arresters made of crimped metal ribbon elements were developed and began to be used more freqnendy (Binks 1999). The major impetus for die use of crimped metal ribbon detonation flame arresters in the US was the enactment of clean air legislation (Clean Air Act of 1990) which inadvertently created a safety problem by requiring reductions in volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions. To do this, manifolded vent systems (vapor collection systems) were increasingly installed in many chemical process industry plants which captured VOC vapors and transported them to suitable recovery, recycle, or destruction systems. In some of the earliest recorded examples of adsorption, activated carbon was used as the adsorbent. Naturally occurring carbonaceous materials such as coal, wood, coconut shells or bones are decomposed in an inert atmosphere at a temperature of about 800 K. Because the product will not be porous, it needs additional treatment or activation to generate a system of fine pores. Elemental carbon has many important applications. The diamond is a precious gem, known to mankind for ages graphite is used as an electrode and has numerous other applications carbon-14 isotope is used in carbon dating and the isotope carbon-13 in tracer studies and NMR. Carbon black is used in paints, pigments and inks. Activated carbon is used as an adsorbent for purification of water and separation of gases. Coke is used for electrothermal reduction of metal oxides to their metals. These applications are discussed below in more detail. 

These Deloxan beads have an inert siloxane matrix which is advantageous over other adsorbents such as activated carbon or organic polymer-based resins and fibers because (1) valuable API product is not adsorbed and lost as is the case when activated carbons are used and (2) they are chemically resistant to most solvents and stable over a wide pH range (0-12).
