This is an example of a paired data set since the acquisition of samples over an extended period introduces a substantial time-dependent change in the concentration of monensin. The U-tube was developed to simplify the recovery of fluids from deep boreholes and allow flexibility for post-sampling analysis (Freifeld et al. 2005 Freifeld Trautz 2006). A common objective of a data gathering programme is the acquisition of fluid samples. The detailed composition of oil, gas and water is to some degree reguired by almost every discipline involved in field development and production.

Transmission Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy. The most straightforward method for the acquisition of in spectra of surface layers is standard transmission spectroscopy (35,36). Much of today s instrumentation in principle allows for the rapid acquisition of vast amounts of information on a particular sample. However, the instruments and the highly trained staff needed to run them are expensive. Often, samples are not cheap either this is particularly true if they have to be pulled to confirm the quality of production lots. A fixed-bed reactor system was employed (Figure 32.2). Each of the two reactors was charged with 38 cc of Amberlyst BD20 catalyst. Sample ports located at the exit of each reactor enabled increased acquisition of residence time data. Pressure was maintained by a back pressure control valve to maintain methanol in the liquid phase. After charging, the 1st and then 2nd reactors were connected to the pumps and filled with the reaction mixture while vapor was released from each through the top vent valve. Once each reactor was filled with liquid and emptied of vapor, the pressure regulator was connected to the output and both reactors were immersed into the water bath.
