Thiuram Sulfides. These compounds, (8) and (9), are an important class of accelerator. Thiurams are produced by the oxidation of sodium dithiocarbamates. The di- and polysulfides can donate one or more atoms of sulfur from their molecular stmcture for vulcanization. The use of these compounds at relatively high levels with litde or no elemental sulfur provides articles with improved heat resistance. The short-chain (methyl and ethyl) thiurams and dithiocarbamates ate priced 2/kg. Producers have introduced ultra-accelerators based on longer-chain and branched-chain amines that are less volatile and less toxic. This development is also motivated by a desire to rninirnize airborne nitrosamines. [Pg.222]

Conventional cure systems use relatively high levels (2.5 + phr) of sulfur combkied with lower levels of accelerator(s). These typically provide high initial physical properties, tensile and tear strengths, and good initial fatigue life, but with a greater tendency to lose these properties after heat aging. [Pg.238]

Sulfur. Low sulfur stocks and EV sulfur-accelerated systems have better aging resistance. Normally, the oxidation rate increases with the amount of sulfur used in the cure. The increased rate may be due to activation of adjacent C—H groups by high levels of combined sulfur. Saturated sulfides are more inert to oxidation than aHyUc sulfides. Polysulfidic cross-links impart excessive hardening of SBR as compared to more stable monosulfidic cross-links. [Pg.246]

Industrial atmospheres usually accelerate the corrosion of zinc. When heavy mists and dews occur in these areas, they are contaminated with considerable amounts of acid substances such as sulphur dioxide, and the film of moisture covering the metal can be quite acid and can have a pH as low as 3. Under these conditions the zinc is dissolved but, as the corrosion proceeds, the pH rises, and when it has reached a sufficiently high level basic salts are once more formed and provide further protection for the metal. These are usually the basic carbonate but may sometimes be a basic sulphate. As soon as the pH of the moisture film falls again, owing to the solution of acid gases, the protective film dissolves and renewed attack on the metal occurs. Hudson and Stanners conducted tests at various locations in order to determine the effect of atmospheric pollution on the rate of corrosion of steel and zinc. Their figures for zinc are given in Table 4.34 and clearly show the effect which industrial contamination has on the corrosion rate. [Pg.817]

In view of the high cost, when tarnish resistance of the surface is the only requirement it is customary to use the thinnest possible coatings of rhodium (0-000 25-0-000 5 mm). Since rhodium deposits in this thickness range, like thin electrodeposits of other metals, show significant porosity, readily corrodible metals, e.g. steel, zinc-base alloys, etc. must be provided with an undercoating deposit, usually of silver or nickel, which is sufficiently thick to provide a fairly high level of protection to the basis metal even before the final precious metal deposit is applied, and, in this way, to prevent accelerated electrochemical corrosion at pores in the rhodium deposit. [Pg.561]

Accelerated aging and crystal transformation rates have also been traced to high residual moisture content. Ando et al. studied the effect of moisture content on the crystallization of anhydrous theophylline in tablets [9]. Their results also indicate that anhydrous materials convert to hydrates at high levels of relative humidity. In addition, if hygroscopic materials (e.g., polyethylene glycol 6000) are also contained in the formulation, needle-like crystals form at the tablet surface and significantly reduce the release rate of the theophylline. [Pg.294]

The emergence of microbial antibiotic drug resistance was speeded by the indiscriminate use of antibiotics in humans and livestock. Exposure to very low concentrations of antibiotic in meat or milk may have provided a path whereby human pathogens could eventually evolve high-level antibiotic drug resistance. Recently some strains of enterococcus and tuberculosis have developed resistance to all known antibiotic drugs.
