The methods have in turn launched the new fields of nanoscience and nanoteclmology, in which the manipulation and characterization of nanometre-scale structures play a crucial role. STM and related methods have also been applied with considerable success in established areas, such as tribology [2], catalysis [3], cell biology [4] and protein chemistry [4], extending our knowledge of these fields into the nanometre world they have, in addition, become a mainstay of surface analytical laboratories, in the worlds of both academia and industry.

Chetnoinformatics has matured to a sdentific discipline that will change - and in some cases has already changed - the way in which we perceive chemistry. The chemical and, in particular, the pharmaceutical industry are in high need of che-moinformatics specialists. Thus, this field has to be taught in academia, both in specialized courses on chemoinformatics and by integrating chemoinformatics into regular chemistry curricula.

The ACS Committee on Analytical Reagents is comprised of some 15 members from academia, government, and industry (both manufacturers and users of reagents) and meets twice a year at the ACS headquarters in Washington, D.C. A number of states such as New Jersey have passed into law the "Pollution Prevention Act" which requires industry to reduce and eventually eliminate toxic waste in the 1990s (295). The American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) has a 30-year history of involvement with process safety for chemical processing plants. Through its strong ties with process designers, builders, operators, safety professionals and academia, the AIChE has enhanced communication and fostered improvement in the high safety standards of the industry. AIChE publications and symposia have become an information resource for the chemical engineering profession on the causes of accidents and means of prevention. 

In this section, we discuss the role of numerical simulations in studying the response of materials and structures to large deformation or shock loading. The methods we consider here are based on solving discrete approximations to the continuum equations of mass, momentum, and energy balance. Such computational techniques have found widespread use for research and engineering applications in government, industry, and academia.
