Abrasion resistance additives

Du Font s thermoplastic polyester elastomer (TPE) Hytrel has been used in an underwater fiber optic cable produced by Shiplex Wire and Cable Corporation. The elastomer is used to position the fiber optics and is chosen because of its modulus properties that help prevent microbends in the fiber optics. The thermoplastic polyester elastomer is extruded over a central steel wire that imparts strength to the cable. Six fiber optic strands with a diameter of 5 mils each are then positioned and covered by a second Hytrel layer, which is added as part of a coextrusion with nylon to obtain greater abrasion resistance. Additional steel layers and a longitudinally formed copper tape are added, and the whole structure is then enclosed in a polyethylene jacket. [Pg.794]

Abrasion resistance is a major factor in determining the lifetime of apparel. Abrasion-resistant additives are generally waxes, surface-active agents, (metallic) nano and microparticles, or polymers that lubricate the surface of individual fibers to reduce... [Pg.22]

Uses. A soluble form of magnesium nitrate is used as a fertilizer ia states such as Florida where drainage through the porous, sandy soil depletes the magnesium (see Fertilizers). Magnesium nitrate is also used as a prilling aid in the manufacture of ammonium nitrate. A 0.25—0.50% addition of magnesium nitrate to the process improves the stabHity of the prills and also improves durabHity and abrasion resistance. [Pg.352]

Chemical treatments commonly appHed to cormgated paperboard packaging materials include additives that impart various degrees of water resistance, humidity resistance, oil and grease resistance, product abrasion resistance, product corrosion resistance, adhesion release properties, flame-retardant properties, nonskid properties, and static electricity control properties to the finished package (1,2). [Pg.518]

The resins can be a novolak—hexa or a resole—novolak blend. In some appHcations Hquid resoles are used. Addition of alkylated phenol, oil, or cashew nutsheU Hquid (CNSL) reduces hardness and increases abrasion resistance. Modification by mbber improves the coefficient of friction and reduces brake fading. [Pg.305]

Fluoroelastomers excel compared to aU other elastomers in heat, chemical, flame, weathering, fuel, and o2one resistance. In addition oU, oxygen, and water resistance ate very good. The fluoroelastomers, however, ate attacked by amines and some highly polar solvents. The abrasion resistance and low temperature properties ate adequate for most appHcations. [Pg.233]

Urethanes are processed as mbber-like elastomers, cast systems, or thermoplastic elastomers. The elastomer form is mixed and processed on conventional mbber mills and internal mixers, and can be compression, transfer, or injection molded. The Hquid prepolymers are cast using automatic metered casting machines, and the thermoplastic peUets are processed like aU thermoplastic materials on traditional plastic equipment. The unique property of the urethanes is ultrahigh abrasion resistance in moderately high Shore A (75—95) durometers. In addition, tear, tensUe, and resistance to many oUs is very high. The main deficiencies of the urethanes are their resistance to heat over 100°C and that shear and sliding abrasion tend to make the polymers soft and gummy. [Pg.234]

The result is a hard, abrasion-resistant surface, important in many appHcations of cast kon. The depth of the chill may be controlled by regulating the amount of tellurium added. The casting shows a sharp demarcation line between the chilled and unchilled regions there is no intermediate or motded zone. Yet, the chilled portion shows excellent resistance to spalling from thermal or mechanical shock. Tellurium-treated kon is more resistant to sulfuric and hydrochloric acids than is untreated, unchilled gray kon. The amount added ranges from 0.005 to 0.1% ca 60% is lost by volatilization. Excessive addition causes porosity in the castings. [Pg.391]

In addition to fiber and fabric influences on abrasion resistance, chemical finishes must also be considered. Many thermosetting resins used to impart durable press characteristics to ceUulosic fabrics reduce their resistance to abrasion as a result of fiber embrittlement. [Pg.460]

Zirconium oxide is fused with alurnina in electric-arc furnaces to make alumina—zirconia abrasive grains for use in grinding wheels, coated-abrasive disks, and belts (104) (see Abrasives). The addition of zirconia improves the shock resistance of brittle alurnina and toughens the abrasive. Most of the baddeleyite imported is used for this appHcation, as is zirconia produced by burning zirconium carbide nitride. [Pg.432]

In addition to surface area, pore size distribution, and surface chemistry, other important properties of commercial activated carbon products include pore volume, particle size distribution, apparent or bulk density, particle density, abrasion resistance, hardness, and ash content. The range of these and other properties is illustrated in Table 1 together with specific values for selected commercial grades of powdered, granular, and shaped activated carbon products used in Hquid- or gas-phase appHcations (19). [Pg.529]
