ZINC MURIATE SOLUTION (7646-85-7) Reacts with water, forming an acidic solution (pH about 4) zinc oxychloride may be formed with large amounts of water. Violent reaction with strong bases, potassium. Attacks metals as fume or in the presence of moisture. [Pg.1251]

Improved plow steel and extra improved plow steel, bright and galvanized. Use a suitable solvent to remove lubricant. The wires then should be dipped in commercial muriatic acid until thoroughly cleaned. The depth of immersion in acid must not be more than the broomed length. The acid should be neutralized by rinsing in a bicarbonate of soda solution. Fresh acid should be prepared when satisfactory cleaning of the wires requires more than one minute. (Prepare new solution—do not merely add new acid to old.) Be sure acid surface is free of oil or scum. The wires should be dried and then dipped in a hot solution of zinc-ammonium chloride flux. Use a concentration of 1 lb (454 g) of zinc-ammonium chloride in 1 gal (3.8 L) of water and maintain the solution at a temperature of 180°F (82°C) to 200°F (93°C). [Pg.592]

FLUX (Solder). A material which by its chemical action facilitates the soldering and brazing of metals. Such a flux applied to a metallic surface cleans it and renders it receptive to amaigamalion with the solder or brazing metal. Some fluxes are rosin, for soldering tin muriatic acid, fnr galvanized iron and other zinc surface and borax for brazing,... [Pg.662]

Salts Compounds formed by the union of acids and bases, by the action of alkalies upon metals, or by the direct union of elements. The term is often incorporated in the common name of salts used as pharmaceuticals bitter salts, epsom salt, or Seidlitz salt (magnesium sulfate), preparing salt (sodium stannate), Preston s salts (ammonium chloride), Rochelle salt or Seignette s salt (potassium and ammonium tartrate), salt of Mars (ferrous sulfate), salt of Saturn (lead acetate), salt of tartar (potassium carbonate), salt of tin (stannous chloride), salt of wisdom (mercury bichloride and ammonium chloride), sore-throat salt (fused potassium nitrate), vinegar salts (calcium acetate), and vomiting salt (zinc sulfate). The term is also applied to some acids, such as salt of lemon or sour salt (citric acid), salt of sorrel (oxalic acid), and spirit of salt (muriatic acid). ... [Pg.967]

ETHER MURIATIC (75-00-3) Flammable gas (flash point -58 F/-50°C). Reacts slowly with water, steam, or hot surfaces, producing hydrochloric acid and hydrogen chloride gas. Contact with alkali metals, aluminum, lithium, magnesium, sodiiun, potassium, zinc may cause fire and explosions. Attacks common metals in the presence of moisture. Attacks some plastics and rubber. Flow or agitation of substance may generate electrostatic charges due to low conductivity. [Pg.514]

After gross deposits have been removed as far as practicable, use oxalic acid as for rust stains. Hydrochloric (muriatic) acid and proprietary mixtures based on it are sometimes used, but this approach is not recommended because the action on zinc is too vigorous and it is difficult to rinse off residues. [Pg.374]

Wollaston was not present at the Royal Society the night Volta s paper was read, for on the previous day he haui set off on a four week tour of the Lake District with Hasted. Before his departure he had reduced the scale of his electrolytic cell even further, for he took a small demonstration device with him. As Hasted was to recall He had a minute tube in his pocket which with a wire connecting thro a few drops of muriatic acid the zinc and silver, shewed the whole principle, and first set Dr, Currie, whom he saw on his way back thro ... [Pg.23]

If a piece of zinc and a piece of silver have each one extremity immersed in the same vessel, containing sulphuric or muriatic acid diluted with a large quantity of water, the zinc is dissolved, and yields hydrogen gas, by deconqposition of the water the silver, not being acted upon, has no power of decoRposing water but, %dienever the zinc and silver are made to touch, or any metallic communication is m de between them, hydrogen gas is also formed at the surface of the silver (16). [Pg.23]
