Units. The SI system of units and conversion factors (qv) has been formally adopted worldwide, with the exception of Bmnei, Burma, Yemen, and the United States. The participation of the United States in the metrication movement is evident by the passage of the Metric Acts of 1866 and 1975 and the subsequent estabUshment of the American National Metric Council (private) and the U.S. Metric Board (pubHc) to plan, coordinate, monitor, and encourage the conversion process. [Pg.23]

Eight olibanum samples of unknown botanical origin have been analysed [26]. The chemical compositions are summarized in Table 10.3 for three of them. Both the olibanum coming from Somalia and that from a market in Ta izz (Yemen) have been attributed to Boswellia carteri or sacra on the basis of the occurrence of the characteristic diterpenes isoincensole and isoincensole acetate (128) together with diterpene 126. The absence of methylchavicol (38), oxygenated sesquiterpene 91 and diterpene 124 and the presence in relatively large amount of (3-caryophyllene (73), ot-humulene (78) and caryophyllene oxide (95) excluded the hypothesis of a B. serrata sample. [Pg.281]

Samples purchased on markets in Sa da and San a in Yemen comprise no diterpenes from the incensole family but large amounts of dimers of ot-phellan-drene, in particular dimer 3 (113), and of both compounds 55 and 56. This pattern identifies them as B. frereana olibanum. [Pg.281]

The archaeological sample (first to fourth century AD, sample 1286) was stocked in an amphora bearing the inscription incense in a warehouse (sector 6) at the Bir Ali site (Yemen). The authors objective was to confirm whether it really was frankincense [26]. [Pg.297]

It is also important to understand the source and significance of genetic variations. The Pima Indians have the highest rates of diabetes in the world Tay-Sachs disease is primarily found in Ashkenazi Jews. Contemporary literature indicates that these differences stem from reproductive isolation, not race. Genetic traits common to persons with sickle-cell disease are related to malaria frequency and not our social view of race. This is why the disease can be found in high frequency in Yemen, West Africa, Greece, and Saudi Arabia. [Pg.277]

Distribution of Primaquine-Sensitive Individuals in the Various Population Groups. Primaquine sensitivity was found in Negroes (B7, B19, C3, C7, G6, G7, G18, H21, M7), Caucasians (G18, L3, M7, W3), and certain Jewish tribes (S21, S23). The phenomenon could be detected in 4.6% of an unselected population of 305 North Americans. In healthy Negroes the sensitivity was more common (7.2%) than in Caucasians (1.3%) (G18). In the Jewish population, the defect was found in 20% of the non-Ashkenazic Jews originating from Iraq and Persia, in 5% from Yemen and Turkey, and in 2% from North Africa. Also 3% of the Arabs in Israel showed drug sensitivity. [Pg.272]

Bombing of U.S.S. Cole — On October 12, 2000, a small boat assisting in the refueling of the U.S.S. Cole, a destroyer, at the Port of Aden, Yemen, exploded and killed 17 sailors. The small boat was packed with sophisticated explosives that tore a 20- by 40-foot gash in the midhull of the ship. The attackers are believed to be tied to Osama bin Ladin and his worldwide al-Qaida network. [Pg.32]
