We note here an important concept introduced by Polya, that of the "corona" or "wreath product" of two permutation groups. If M is an w X M matrix, and G and H are permutation groups of degree m and n, consider all permutations of the mn elements of M obtained as follows ... 

The required result can be written ZiA Z( T)) but since we now have a process very much akin to that of substituting one cycle index in another — the process by which the cycle index of a wreath product is obtained — it is usual to use the notation of the wreath product and write Z(y4j)[Z( T )]. 

We have already seen how the cycle index of the wreath product G[H] is obtained by substituting the cycle index Z(// . ..) of H in... 

Chemists would like to invent molecules that assemble themselves into specific, we 11-organized arrays. Recently there have been some exciting successes. Our inset is a molecular view of a self-assembled molecular wreath. This organized sfructure forms when four molecular chains weave themselves together in the presence of 12 copper cations. Self-assembling molecular systems could lead to new materials with useful properties. They may also shed light on how life originated. 

During cheese-making time, elder branches have been hung on the walls to repel flies. Well cared for animals have worn a wreath of elder leaves to deter bugs. An infusion of the leaves can be poured into mole and mouse holes to inspire them to find other living quarters.

Coccoliths, and the related scales and sheaths, are characteristic features of a widespread group of organisms. Certain structures of groups of chemical interest which may be difficult to see, can be easily envisaged by using caterpillar trees as models. We use as an example the composition [9] of two permutation groups St and Sj (involving the permutation of i and j objects respectively) which is denoted by S,[SJ (and is read S around Sj). This group is known as the wreath product or the Gruppenkranz . As a simple illustration we show how a caterpillar tree can be used to model the elements of S2[S3]. Then we have two sets, viz.,... 

The operation results in the permutation of 2 and 3 leaving other objects unchanged and therefore this element generates four one-cycles and a one two-cycle, i.e., sfs2. In general for S [Sj3 a tree of the form T (j, j) can be used. Extended wreath products introduced by Balasubramanian [10] can also be modeled using appropriate Gutman trees [11],... 

Furthermore, the steel reinforcement rods in the reinforced concrete would have to run wreath-like around the hole, and would be capable of verification by means of induction devices, even today. 

But there is more. In the opening shown in Fig. 46 the reinforcement rods were only separated and bent back. They possess their full length even today. One could bend them back again and weld them back together with their stumps, which are also visible to the left of the photograph (covered with snow).262 Nor is there any trace of reinforcement rods running in a wreath-like pattern around the hole. This hole, therefore, can never have been used as an introduction hole it was never finished. And what makes matters worse this is still the best of all holes and cracks in this roof in existence today. All others are even more irregular and filled with reinforcement rods. 

A symposium to honor the memory of R. J. Block was organized with the aid of the Division of Biological Chemistry of the American Chemical Society and held in September 1962 in Atlantic City, N. J. The papers presented at this symposium, together with additional contributions from several recognized authorities in their respective fields, are presented in this memorial volume as a tribute to R. J. Block from his friends and colleagues and as a wreath on his lonely grave in a foreign land. 

Plants used as food or medicine are often dried so they can be stored and used months or even years after harvest. Plant materials used for decorative purposes are also dried, sometimes before being used, and sometimes after they have been incorporated into an object. Bouquets or wreaths may contain green and dry elements when they are created. 

Wreaths and other decorative objects made from woven or interlaced branches or vines can be made with a wide variety of materials, since they are not expected to have much strength or to last for more than a few years, if that. Grapevines, which are unsuitable for larger, stronger projects such as bentwood furniture or trellises, are commonly used for wreaths and decorations.
