Wounds foreign material

A skin wound cleanser is a nonirritating, Hquid preparation (or product to be used with water) that assists in the removal of foreign material from small superficial wounds, does not delay wound healing, and may contain an antimicrobial ingredient. [Pg.140]

Debridement refers to the process of cleaning a wound by removal of foreign material and dead tissue. Cleansing of the wound facilitates rapid healing and minimizes the risk of infection due to the presence of bacteria at the wound surface. The formation of a clot, followed by a scab, on a... [Pg.397]

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a colorless effervescent solution. It s a common product used to clean wounds and sores. When added to water (or any moist environment), it immediately releases oxygen. This creates bubbles that break apart dirt amd foreign material in a wound and also oxidizes (and kills) bacteria. The reaction can be quite vigorous and for this reason it s sold in stores in very dilute concentrations of around 4%. [Pg.330]

The care and treatment of wounds are matters of clinical judgement. The wounds should first be examined, to determine the amount of exudate and infection that exists. In addition, the surrounding tissue should be assessed to establish the extent of ulceration. The first stage of treatment (debridement) often requires the removal of foreign material and dead tissue from the wound, in order to prevent infection and promote healing. Subsequent... [Pg.191]

Whenever there is damage to the skin or mucous membranes and bacteria can enter, there is the risk of infection [40], The occurrence of infection will prevent the resolution of inflammation, and a chronic inflammatory response will arise. If there is a chronic inflammatory response, the wound healing response wiU not be completed. The combination of the injury and the presence of the foreign material will initiate the inflammatory response. It is well known that the presence of a foreign body greatly increases the infection risk and markedly decreases the number of bacteria required to cause an infection from 10 to 10. Not only is there an increased risk of infection but also the infection wiU be difficult to cure, most often only through the removal of the device [3]. The consequences of this depend on the need for the device. Removal of sutures may cause little impairment to healing, whereas removal of the total artificial heart would result in death [15]. [Pg.103]

Sutures are used for closing wounds in all body tissnes and are the most frequently implanted foreign materials. Of the estimated 50-60million open surgical procedures performed each year, one of the common challenges is the need to connect tissues. This typically involves closing a wound or incision across various levels of muscle, fascia, fat, and skin. [Pg.124]
