Wound treatment inflammatory processes

Helichrysum (strawflower, Asteraceae) species are traditionally used for the treatment of wounds, infections, and respiratory conditions (Lourens et al., 2004). In the inflammatory process free radicals adsorb on the phagocyte cells, so the antioxidative activity of the extract and the EOs of different Helichrysum species were examined. Therefore, the plant material of Helichrysum dasyanthum, Helichrysum excisum, and Helichrysum petiolare were collected and the EO obtained by hydrodistillation. The GC-MS analysis showed that 1,8-cineole (20-34%), p-cymene (6-10%), and a-pinene (3-17%) are principal components of the EO. The EOs of all three different species show an antioxidative activity in the DPPH assay, bnt it has to be noticed that the extract, which was obtained by a cold... [Pg.261]

Recently, the notion that the chronicity of inflammation may not actually drive the fibrogenic process has been widely appreciated (Tables 1, 2, and 3). Some propose that it is indeed the alteration of the mesenchymal cell phenotypes that disrupts the balance between collagen synthesis and degradation in the wound-healing process, highlighted by clinical evidence that shows unsuccessful treatment of fibrosis with anti-inflammatory or immunosuppressive drugs (18,19). One scenario is that mesenchymal cells (myofibroblasts and fibroblasts) are phenotypically altered and thus do not undergo apoptosis after resolution. [Pg.297]

The key treatment for diabetic foot wounds is often debridement in its many guises. Despite the plethora of treatment available their success can be limited if the wound is not sufficiently prepared. The process of debridement removes non-viable tissue and the products remaining from an abnormal, sustained inflammatory response. Increased protease levels and an imbalance of matrix metal-loproteinases and their tissue inhibitors [10] maintain the chronic wound state and their removal with associated hyperaemia will encourage an influx of the biological components of healing. The level of debridement used will depend on the aetiopathogenesis and the morphology of the ulcer. [Pg.229]
