Examples of other antimicrobial flavonoids from the Anthemideae tribe also included those from the Argentinian Tagetes [236], from Anthemis cotula L. [237], six flavonols isolated from Helichrysum conglobatum (Viv.) Steud. growing in Egypt [238] and another Helichrysum species, Helichrysum compactum Boiss., which yielded several flavonoids with antibacterial and antifungal activity [239]. [Pg.495]

Naturally Occurring Thiophens.—Re-investigation of the polar fractions of the aerial parts of Centaurea ruthenica gave, amongst twenty new compounds, 5-hydroxymethyl-2-(3-hydroxypropynyl)thiophen. ° The investigation of two further Helichrysum species led to the isolation of three new unusual thiophen derivatives (137)—(139). New acetylenic thiophen derivatives such as (140) have been isolated from Cullumia setosa. ... [Pg.92]

Lourens et al. (2004) evaluated the in vitro biological activity and chemical composition of the EOs of four indigenous South African Helichrysum species (Asteraceae), such as Helichrysum dasyanthum, Helichrysum felinum (strawberry everlasting), Helichrysum excisum, and. Helichrysum petiolare (licorice plant). An interesting anti-inflammatory effect could be observed in the lipooxy-genase-5 assay at doses between 25 and 32 pg/mL. Analysis of the chemical composition showed that the EOs comprise mainly monoterpenes such as a-pinene, 1,8-cineole, andp-cymene, only the oil of Helichrysum felinum was dominated by sesquiterpenes in low concentrations with P-caryo-phyllene as main compound on top. [Pg.249]

Helichrysum (strawflower, Asteraceae) species are traditionally used for the treatment of wounds, infections, and respiratory conditions (Lourens et al., 2004). In the inflammatory process free radicals adsorb on the phagocyte cells, so the antioxidative activity of the extract and the EOs of different Helichrysum species were examined. Therefore, the plant material of Helichrysum dasyanthum, Helichrysum excisum, and Helichrysum petiolare were collected and the EO obtained by hydrodistillation. The GC-MS analysis showed that 1,8-cineole (20-34%), p-cymene (6-10%), and a-pinene (3-17%) are principal components of the EO. The EOs of all three different species show an antioxidative activity in the DPPH assay, bnt it has to be noticed that the extract, which was obtained by a cold... [Pg.261]

Other Helichrysum species (e.g., H. orien-tale Gaertn., H. arenarium (L.) Moench, and H. stoechas (L.) DC.) are also used H. orientale in the production of the essential oil and H. stoechas the absolute. [Pg.378]

Numerous flavonoids including naringenin, apigenin, luteolin, kaempferol, helichrysin, isohelichrysin, naringenin-5-glucoside, luteo-lin-7-glucoside, and quercitrin have been isolated from various Helichrysum species. ... [Pg.378]
