For a first time the theme selected for the 8th Conference was Cosmic Ray and Nuclear Physics, but a long period of illness of the President of the Scientific Committee, Paul Langevin, imposed a first adjournment. Later it was decided that the conference would deal with the problems of elementary particles and their mutual interactions and that it would be held in October 1939. The whole problem of abbreviated titles is aptly reviewed by Mitchell in his preface to the second edition of the World List, where he states that the use of abbreviated titles is a necessity in scientific literature, but unless the abbreviations have been devised so that each one indicates only one periodical and also unless they are in general use, they fail of their purpose. The Royal Society Scientific Information Conference, held in London from June 21 to July 2, 1948, recommended that the World List abbreviations be adopted by abstracting agencies. [Pg.103]

Looking at periodic tables from different times and produced in different countries reveals a long history of scientific and political struggle. Even today, periodic tables demonstrate the creator s position regarding the control of chemistry by a governing body through its decision whether to use the IUPAC system or the names declared by the discoverers. Despite the various controversies, the periodic table of elements has become a standardized tool for education and research. It can be found as giant wall charts in classrooms and on wallet-size laminated plastic charts, and there are interactive versions on the Internet. It seems that the question of what the elements are and how they work has been answered. As far as everyday life is concerned, the elements listed on the periodic table really do constitute the matter that makes up the world around us, at least to element 92. [Pg.112]

Volume IV/8C summarizes most of the observed values of densities of unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbons which include normal and branched alkenes, alkadienes, alkynes, and miscellaneous compounds such as alkatrienes and compounds with double and triple bonds in the crystal and liquid phases that have been reported in the world s scientific hterature. The values Usted have been extracted from the TRC Source Database. These data have been collected by the Thermodynamics Research Center over a period of years and used as a basis for density values listed in the TRC Thermodynamic Tables -Hydrocarbons. An additional literature search was made to locate other data and bring the collection np to date. It is believed that this compilation includes at least 90% of the pertinent data reported in the literature. The usual experimental conditions are in contact with air at one atmosphere below the normal boiling point of the hydrocarbon, and in equilibrium with the vapor phase above the normal boiling point. In the summary tables, temperatures are reported on the Kelvin scale. These were obtained by adding 273.15 to temperatures originally given on the Celsius scale. [Pg.5]
