Notes 1. Xi, X2, X3.... Xu are the selected macro-indicators that used to calculate RSDI. 2. The first three indicators and Xio are derived from the ASNet database for ASEAN countries (which presented in Chapter 4), while the main source of data for these indicators in Sweden are the International Road Federation (IRF). 3. X4, X7, Xs, X9, Xu and HDI are taken from the latest Human Development Report 2004 and the World Development Indicators (WDI). For details, see httti //hdr.undp.org/2004/, http //www.worldbank.org/data/. 4. The source of X5 and Xe in ASEAN countries is ASNet database. In some cases, the ADB consultants estimated this data. For Sweden, X5 and Xe are taken from (Koornstra et al., 2002). 5. The seat belt use rates cover mostly the front-seat occupants only. 6. The GNP per capita is the GNP in current U.S. dollars as calculated by the United Nations and the World Bank. [Pg.97]

Extrapolating exposure estimates to all urban cities In the world would Indicate that as many as 625 million people, mostly In developing countries, are exposed to unacceptable levels of 02 pollution and about 1.25 billion people live In urban areas where SPN levels exceed acceptable guidelines. This means that less than 20 percent of city dwellers live In environments that can be considered to have acceptable outdoor air quality levels. [Pg.182]

Similarly, the European Union (EU) has listed cobalt as one of the 40 critical metals for future development (2). These facts clearly indicate that cobalt is badly needed for further world development. [Pg.53]

Economic impacts of sustainability can be measured with a capital approach that can be defined as maintaining economic, environmental, human, and social capital over time for future generations (Kulig, Kolfoort, and Hoekstra 2010). The capital approach can be proposed as a theoretical basis for sustainable development indicators (Atkinson and Hamilton 2003 World Bank 2006 UNECE 2014). The capital approach provides a theoretical approach by measuring all capital stocks in their own units. The capital approach can provide consistent, theoretically sound, and policy-relevant comparisons between countries (Kulig et al. 2010). [Pg.3]

The blistering caused by mustard gas results from the high local concentrations of HCl produced when mustard comes into contact with water—or any other nucleophile—on skin or in lung tissue. Autopsies of soldiers killed by mustard gas in World War I revealed that they had extremely low white blood cell counts and defects in bone marrow development, indicating profound effects on rapidly dividing cells. [Pg.523]

Breast Cancer. Many studies have observed low incidences of hormone-dependent cancers, particularly breast cancer, in Asian countries compared with Western countries and it is becoming increasingly accepted that dietary factors play an important role. Although breast cancer can occur in either males or females, only about 1 % of all cases occur in men, and male breast cancer is a rare disease in all parts of the world." Although there appear to be some similar risk factors for breast cancer in males and females, there is no indication in the literature that diet is either a risk or a protective factor for male breast cancer. The development of breast cancer is known to be highly dependent on the hormones associated with female reproductive functions, while established genetic factors have been... [Pg.116]

One of the most significant Indices of air pollution potential Is provided by statistics on motor vehicle use. On a global scale the number of vehicles continues to rise although the rate of growth has slowed In North America and Europe as a whole, where vehicle densities are the highest In the world. Since 1979, the most rapid growth has occurred In Asia and South America where vehicle ownership has more than doubled (11). In the developing countries, as well as many others, these vehicles are not equipped with emission control devices. [Pg.166]
