Working Social Security

Labor costs. In arriving at the total labor costs, there must be included social security costs, pension costs and any provisions for holiday pay. It may be desirable, where users take steam overnight, to apportion costs in such a way as to reflect the higher cost of labor employed on night work. 

Living on less than five hundred dollars a month from Social Security income, Susan recently became the owner of a small home built to meet her environmental needs. The kitchen, living and work areas are all part of one open room. Electrical equipment is limited to a computer and television, both carefully sealed and shielded to minimize EMF exposures. 

Something went wrong recently for me. Someone obtained my Social Security number, address, work number and address, and a few other vital pieces of data. That person then applied for a credit account in my name. The application was approved, and I soon received a bill (50) for nearly 5,000 worth of computer-related purchases.

There are costs associated with working in retirement. When the loss of Social Security benefits and the cost of taxes are taken into account, it may not be worth it. 

About 400,000 Social Security checks are mailed outside the U.S. each month. This is not an accurate estimate of the number of U.S. citizens who have retired abroad, because some checks go to foreigners who earned benefits while working in the U.S. and many U.S. citizens have their benefits directly deposited into their U.S. bank account. But, it does show that a great many have chosen to live abroad in retirement. 

A cohort of 3,408 workers from four former facilities that produced chromium compounds from chromite ore in northern New Jersey was assembled in 1990-1991 using social security records (Rosenman and Stanbury 1996). The subjects were known to have worked in the four facilities sometime between 1937 and 1971, when the last facility closed. Exposure durations ranged from less than 1 year to greater than 20 years. The overall risk of lung cancer derived from proportionate cancer mortality ratios (PCMR) was 1.51 for white males and 1.34 for black males. The risk increased with duration of employment and latency since time of first employment. The cancer mortality ratio for greater than 20 years of workplace exposure and greater than 20 years since first exposure was 194 and 308 for white and black males, respectively. Doctors working for the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) or the Institute of Social Security and Services for Government Workers (ISSSTE) are considered to be government officers, and therefore are not allowed to receive gifts or donations from pharmaceutical companies. 

In developed countries, by 2020, the working population aged 15-65 years will fall from 22% in 1996 to 16%. Those aged 65 years and over will increase to 20 from 16% (US Bureau of Census, 1996). In the United States, 60 years ago, the retirement age for Social Security pension was designed for an expected average lifespan of 65 years. Already this has been pushed back to 67 years by year 2004, and additional legislation will probably push the age requirements back to 70 in 10 years time, when the baby-boomers swell the retired population. 

In 1988, the DHSS was split into two departments, the Department of Health (DoH) and the Department of Social Security (DSS). Following the Evans-Cunliffe report, from April 1989, the Medicines Division of the DoH became the Medicines Control Agency (MCA) under a director, and was expected to self-fund its operation from fees commensurate with the services provided. The UK MCA in 1997 had 458 staff, of whom 150 approximately worked in licensing, 130 in post-licensing, including pharmacovigilance, 75 in licensing inspection of manufacture and enforcement, and...
