Polyimides (PI) were among the eadiest candidates in the field of thermally stable polymers. In addition to high temperature property retention, these materials also exhibit chemical resistance and relative ease of synthesis and use. This has led to numerous innovations in the chemistry of synthesis and cure mechanisms, stmcture variations, and ultimately products and appHcations. Polyimides (qv) are available as films, fibers, enamels or varnishes, adhesives, matrix resins for composites, and mol ding powders. They are used in numerous commercial and military aircraft as stmctural composites, eg, over a ton of polyimide film is presently used on the NASA shuttle orbiter. Work continues on these materials, including the more recent electronic apphcations. [Pg.530]

An indication of growing interdisciplinary interest in the field is illustrated in a review on new perspectives in surface chemistry and catalysis by Roberts (.160), who discussed the interaction of N2 with iron surfaces. In so doing, he referred to the Fe (N2) , matrix Mdssbauer work of Barrett and Montano (7), which showed that molecular nitrogen only bonds to iron when the latter is present as a dimer. As the chemisorption studies (161) indicated that N2 is absorbed on singleatom sites, Roberts suggested (160), of the matrix data (7), "if this is correct, then our assignment of the N(ls) peak at 405 eV to end-on chemisorbed N2 will require further investigation. It can be noted that other approaches, based on irreversible continuum mechanics, have also been used to study diffusion in polymers [61,224]. A final point needs to be made. Theory has indicated that AB cements should be amorphous. However, a degree of crystallization does sometimes occur, its extent varying from cement to cement, and this often misled early workers in the field who used X-ray diffraction as a principal method of study. Although this technique readily identifies crystalline phases, it cannot by its nature detect amorphous material, which may form the bulk of the matrix. Thus, in early work too much emphasis was given to crystalline structures and too little to amorphous ones.
