Wood bullets

Wood bullets are often used in blank ammunition where automatic weapon functioning is required. They can be lethal at short range if some form of bullet breakup device is not fitted to the muzzle of the firearm. Some wood bullets may be sabots for subcaliber projectiles. 

It has been proved that powder may be inflamed, not ouly by the conpussion of hard bodies, but by that of comparatively soft ones, provided it be sufficiently powerful. Experiment hag shown that poyvder placed upon lead, or even upon wood, may bo ignited by the shock of a leaden bullet fired at it. 

Pistol and revolver cartridges can be loaded with lead shot pellets, primarily for short range vermin control. The shot can be totally enclosed within the cartridge case and sealed with a wad, or the shot may be contained in a paper, cardboard, plastic, or wood sabot. Tests to determine bullet resistance shall be conducted an test panels or empty magazines which shall resist penetration of 5 out of 5 shots placed independently of each other in an area at least 3 feet by 3 feet. If hardwood or softwood is used, the water content of the wood must not exceed 15%.

During World War II, synthetic rubber and resin-modified phenolics were used to bond aluminum sheets (available only in in. thickness at that time) into billets from which airplane propellers were carved, thus replacing laminated wood, which often shattered on impact with a bullet. Similar adhesives were used to bond rubber to metal in a variety of vibration-damping applications. In police investigations it is often necessary to detect traces of metallic lead in certain portions of substrates which may have been exposed to the impact of uncoated lead bullets discharged from fire arms. Such substrates, whether they have been penetrated or pierced, may be of various kinds in general, wood, fabrics, and paper are to be considered. The rhodizonate test as used in the foregoing procedures can be employed.
