A third aspect concerns heat loss mechanisms. Most animals lose heat either by sweating or by panting. Doubly labeled water studies in humans (Schoeller 1988 Wong et al. 1988) indicate that respiratory waters (mouth and nasal) have 5 0 values that can be 10%o to 20%o lower than sweat. Thus, animals that pant could be expected to increase their body water 5 0 compared to animals that sweat. [Pg.123]

Two clinical studies with CD4+ lymphocytes expressing an antiviral were performed. Marking in both studies was low but there was some indication for a possible selective advantage conferred by the ribozyme (Buchschacher and Wong-Staal 2001 Macpherson et al. 2005). [Pg.279]

Inhibition of steroid sulphatase and sulphotransferase Steroid sulphotransferase catalyses the addition of sulphate to steroidal compounds whilst steroid sulphatase catalyses the reverse reaction. In vitro studies have demonstrated that a metabolite of genistein, 4-ethylphenol, can inhibit sulphotransferase (Harris et al, 2000). Sulphoconjugates of daidzein have also been found to potently inhibit these enzymes in vitro (Wong and... [Pg.68]

Chiu et al, 1992 Lin Finder, 1983 Lin et al, 1988b Potkin et al, 1984 Lin etal., 1989 Ruiz et al, 1996 Jann et al, 1989 Jann etal, 1992 Zhang-Wong etal., 1998). The majority of these studies were carried out with haloperidol. A number of studies examined differences between Caucasians and Hispanics, and African Americans and Caucasians (Midha et al., 1988b Midha etal, 1988a Ruiz et al., 1996). In general these studies provided mixed results. Another noteworthy feature of the research literature is that there appear to be no studies that have considered ethnic differences in pharmacokinetics and response for the depot antipsychotics. This may be an artifact of the low levels of depot prescribing found in the US, China, and Japan. [Pg.48]

As mentioned previously, in the AMD retina iron metabolism is compromised (He et al., 2007 Wong et al., 2007). Thus, it is of interest to determine the effects of potential antioxidants in the presence of iron. In an in vitro study of ARPE-19 cells, addition of a lipophilic iron complex led to about a ninefold increase in the photosensitized yield of 7a,(3-cholesterol hydroperoxides (Wrona et al., 2004). In the presence of the iron, ascorbate exerted pro-oxidant effects, while the effects of a-tocopherol, zeaxanthin, or their combination were still protective (Wrona et al., 2004). Thus, it appears that the effects of potential antioxidants are strongly dependent on the sources of oxidative damage. The same antioxidant may be protective under certain conditions and exert deleterious effects when the conditions are changed. Therefore a detailed understanding of the sources of the oxidative damage is required in order to design an adequate antioxidant mixture. [Pg.334]
