Women hyperlipidemia

Soon after the introduction of highly active antiretroviral combination treatments (HAART), lipodystrophy was associated with the use of protease inhibitors, and several reports have confirmed that a syndrome of peripheral lipodystrophy, central adiposity, breast hypertrophy in women, hyperlipidemia, and insulin resistance with hyperglycemia is an adverse event associated with the use of potent combination antiretroviral therapy, particularly including HIV-1 protease inhibitors (982-987). 

EF is a 45-year-old woman who presents to the dermatologist for evaluation of facial acne. She has a history of a 25 lb (11.36 kg) weight gain, irregular menses, and frequent vaginal yeast infections over the past 2 years. She complains of increased facial hair growth and lower extremity muscle weakness. Physical examination reveals facial acne, facial hirsutism, truncal obesity, thin skin, and purple abdominal striae. Her past medical history is significant for hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, and rheumatoid arthritis. 

Nephrotic syndrome (proteinuria, edema, hypoalbumine-mia, hyperlipidemia) is a rare and idiosyncratic complication of lithium therapy it usually resolves on withdrawal, and can recur on rechallenge (397,398). Lithium-associated nephrotic syndrome occurred in a 59-year-old woman with lithium toxicity (serum concentration 1.9 mmol/1) whose renal biopsy showed focal segmental glomerulosclerosis. Lithium withdrawal led to resolution of edema and marked improvement in proteinuria and albuminemia (398).

One case of an acute lateral wall myocardial infarction (MI) was reported in a woman after daily ingestion of Edita s Skinny Pill (containing 300 mg bitter orange plus caffeine and guarana) for 1 year (44). The 55-year-old Caucasian woman developed chest discomfort after eating Chinese food. After workup at the hospital, the woman was diagnosed with acute lateral-wall MI and smoking addiction. Her ejection fraction was 0.45. Prior to this incident, she had no known coronary artery disease, hypertension, or hyperlipidemia.

Some types of hyperlipidemia increase a woman s risk for heart disease. Routine screening is not recommended by WHO because of the rarity of the conditions and the high cost of screening. 

Items 3-6 A 35-year-old woman apperu to have familial combined hyperlipidemia. Her serum concentrations of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglyceride are elevated. Her serum concentration of HDL cholesterol is somewhat reduced.
