Wives

Lead is known to cause reproductive and developmental toxicity. Decreased sperm counts and abnormal sperm development have been reported in male workers heavily exposed to lead. Increased incidences of spontaneous abortion have been reported in female lead workers as well as in the wives of male lead workers (13). Lead crosses the placenta and has been found to cause irreversible neurologic impairment to the fetus at maternal blood levels as... 

With great pleasure we dedicate this book, too, to our wives. 

Last night, lawyers and local titans and their wives crowded the entrance and bar, drinking red wine and Johnnie Walker Black and martinis with a twist. By all appearances, the restaurant is enjoying success. 

While writing the book we felt support and encouragement from our wives Nelly Sakharov-Yarin, Lidia Kharchenko-Mosyak and Ruthie Hetsroni who gave us the inspiration to complete the book successfully. Unfortunately, Nelly and Lidia passed away and cannot see a printed version of the book. We dedicate it to their memory it is also dedicated to Ruthie. 

Integrity emanates from Yngve and to win his friendship has been a source of great satisfaction for me. The development of our relation has been eased by the affinity between our wives and children which has allowed us to spend extended periods in each others homes without strain. 

To our wives, Therese and Edith, respectively, who granted us the privilege of book time, and spurred us on when our motivation flagged. 

We acknowledge the stoic forbearance of our wives in putting up with the disturbances and neglect of domestic routines and duties occasioned by the writing of a book.

Who was that We know so little, except that it was probably neither of his wives. There was Gwentlian, the mother of his child, or the child Margaret herself—we know he did love her. It might not even have been in England but Rome or Portugal. It might not even have been a woman. 

On January 29, 1935, the anniversary of Haber s death, the Kaiser Wilhelm Society held a memorial service. The Nazis forbade government and university employees from attending, so many officials sent their wives instead. In an audience of almost 500 women sat a few men, including Carl Bosch. It was the closest thing to a public protest that scientists as a group staged during the Third Reich. 

In February 1936, Du Pont assigned Carothers what was to be his last job for the company, a history of his contributions. Sylvia Moore had ended their relationship, and two days after Carothers completed the history, he surprised friends by marrying a pretty young woman from Du Pont s patent office. Helen Everett Sweetman was not a socialite, like the wives of some of Carothers friends. Her father was a Du Pont administrator, neither a scientist nor a top executive. But Helen had graduated from the University of Delaware with a degree in chemistry, she played a good game of tennis, and she adored Carothers. 

One aspect of the Russian modus vivendi was the exclusion of the wives from official functions a practice also imposed on visitors. For example, during the forum I asked academician Yevgeniy Velikov, then Secretary General Mikhael Gorbachev s science advisor, if he would arrange for the members of the forum committee to be...

With Islamic husbands and Islamic wives, I ve seen things just fissure, but in other cases they have been able to come to some kind of an appropriate compromise.
