Another example from the Suggested Reading List is the book, Winning Ways, by Dick Lyles. Lyles provides pointers on how to work well with people and to get great results. In the book, there are four secrets of Winnings Ways ...

As a corollary to this, success can create opposition. While it cannot be helped in some situations, on your part, consider how success was achieved. If you were fair and positioned yourself in win-win ways, you can at least minimize the opposition. Anticipate the aftermath of success. If you are perceived as having played win-lose, even if you succeed this time, they will be wishing for your failure in future.

Whenever unvented combustion occurs iadoors or when venting systems attached to combustion units malfunction, a variety of combustion products win be released to the iadoor environment. Iadoor combustioa units include nonelectric stoves and ovens, furnaces, hot water heaters, space heaters, and wood-burning fireplaces or stoves. Products of combustion include CO, NO, NO2, fine particles, aldehydes, polynuclear aromatics, and other organic compounds. Especially dangerous sources are unvented gas and kerosene [8008-20-6] space heaters which discharge pollutants directly into the living space. The best way to prevent the accumulation of combustion products indoors is to make sure all units are properly vented and properly maintained. 

Stimulate Voluntary Control. As previously indicated, voluntary control is the desired method for regulating problems which have their roots in industry. It is desired that this approach be undertaken and its many possibilities exhausted before resort is made to other measures. Sincere efforts in this direction will win the cooperation and support of all other interested groups. The committee will aid and encourage this approach by bringing health problems to industry s attention and will suggest possible ways for their correction.

It is a common feature of most AI methods that flexibility exists in the way that we can run the algorithm. In the SOM, we can choose the shape and dimensionality of the lattice, the number of nodes, the initial learning rate and how quickly the rate diminishes with cycle number, the size of the initial neighborhood and how it too varies with the number of cycles, the type of function to be used to determine how the updating of weights varies with distance from the winning node, and the stopping criterion. 

If you have been around for some time, you would know that we all make horrible mistakes. But some of our mistakes even find their way undetected into major magazines (and books). And then, not only do they sometimes stay that way, but maybe win an award or two, as well One hilarious example of this is in Figure 12-1.1 just happen to know the history...

Litigation is not always the only or best way to resolve conflicts. Mediation offers an alternative approach and it is one that can be quite efficient and successful. Mediation can be faster, less expensive, and can lead to creative solutions not always possible in a court of law. Additionally, mediation focuses on mutually acceptable solutions, rather than on winning or losing.
