Whisker-type resins

Many monomers can be grafted by redox polymerization to the magnetic core [magnetic material embedded in poly(vinyl alcohol) matrix nominally 100% cross-linked with glutaraldehyde] to get whisker-type resins " . Acrylic acid and acryl-... [Pg.95]

The flocculating properties of resins from barium ferrite and y-iron oxide are similar. Even diough the magnetized resin is flocculated, the floes break up readily when stirred so that the particles react more rapidly than standard-sized resin beads which are 300-1200 pm in diameter (Fig. 2). The shell configuration of whisker-type resins also enhances reaction r tes. Because of the magnetic flocculation phenomenon the magnetized beads separate out much more rapidly than the unmagnetized ones (Fig. 3). [Pg.96]

The term s plastic, polymer, resin, elastomer, and reinforced plastic (RP) are some-what synonymous. However, polymer and resin usually denote the basic material. Whereas plastic pertains to polymers or resins containing additives, fillers, and/or reinforcements. Recognize that practically all materials worldwide contain some type of additive or ingredient. An elastomer is a rubberlike material (natural or synthetic). Reinforced plastics (also called composites although to be more accurate called plastic composites) are plastics with reinforcing additives, such as fibers and whiskers, added principally to increase the product s mechanical properties. [Pg.338]

Basically a plastic composite is the assembly of two or more materials made to behave as a single product. Examples include vinyl-coated fabric used in air mattresses or laminated metal bonded together with a plastic adhesive used in helicopter blades. The RP type of composite combines a plastic with a reinforcing agent that can be fibrous, powdered, spherical, crystalline, or whisker, made of organic, inorganic, metallic, or ceramic material. To be structurally effective, there must be a strong adhesive bond between the resin and reinforcement. [Pg.460]

A hybrid composite [121,122] can contain more than one type of reinforcement and/or more than one type of matrix, with the objective of improving or lowering the cost of the basic composite [123]. The second reinforcement may be a fiber (continuous or chopped), particles or whiskers. The fiber reinforcement can be in the same laminae and interspersed using any textile process such as weaving, or in different laminae, interspersing plies to obtain the desired mechanical/ physical properties. A sandwich composite is a special case which has an interlayer of a material such as A1 foil or a honeycomb. The matrix may be different for each type of reinforcement, or added to infiltrate the reinforced matrix (e.g. a thermoplastic resin such as PSU) to confer controlled viscosity in the matrix, or an elastomer (e.g. CTBN) for increased toughness. [Pg.929]

Semiconductor performance. The n-type semiconductor (resistivity = 7.14 il-cm) is formed when polygonal needles of polygonal zinc oxide whiskers overlap with each other. The resin matrix composites reinforced by polygonal zinc oxide whiskers could be used to make electronic... [Pg.106]
