Wheat-germ agglutinin binds to the surface of human platelets and leads to their agglutination. Unlike other aggregating agents, the clumping ability of platelets by the lectin is markedly reduced on removal of cell-surface neuraminic acid. Since the terminal neuraminic acid residues have been implicated in the clearance of platelets from the circulation, the lectin may prove to be a useful tool in the exploration of those clinical conditions in which platelet survival is shortened. [Pg.378]
