WHAT HAS BEEN ACCOMPLISHED

Now that all the experimental work has been presented in the preceding chapters, the opportunity arises to survey what has been accomplished. In the next section we will evaluate whether or not the goals as formulated at the end of Chapter 1 have been reached. 

In Chapter 6 we survey what has been accomplished and indicate directions for future research. Furthermore, we critically review the influence of water on Lewis acid - Lewis base interactions. This influence has severe implications for catalysis, in particular when hard Lewis acids and bases are involved. We conclude that claims of Lewis-acid catalysis should be accompanied by evidence for a direct interaction between catalyst and substrate. 

What has been accomplished in preceding sections on stiffness relationships serves as the basis for determination of the actual stress field what remains is the definition of the allowable stress field. The first step in such a definition is the establishment of allowable stresses or strengths in the principal material directions. Such information is basic to the study of strength of an orthotropic lamina.

We had a telephone call the other day to ask if we would write a preface, and also to remind us that this was the twenty-fifth volume (25 th ) of Advances in Catalysis, and therefore something of a special occasion. The number 25 is magical only because of our base-ten system of counting, of course, but it does appear to present a long enough history of reviewing catalytic science that we may ask ourselves what has been accomplished. As Editors, we may ask how well we have done our job as suppliers of reviews. As scientists, we may ask what basic advance the science of catalysis has made. 

The scope of this new approach to extended cyclophanes is further demonstrated by the conversion of the tetraethynyl derivatives 126 to the [10.10]cyclophane 128, the reactive [5]cumulene 127 formally being passed en route. New interests and deeper questions, which may still be beyond the imagination at this time, will surely continue to emerge in the future. In some ways, what has been accomplished is just a preparation for the greater research challenges that lay ahead, which must be atomistic in detail, complex in the relationships among phenomena and variables, and integral in scope to relate the events at the atomic scale with the phenomena at a macro scale. 

This chapter provides an overview of knowledge accumulated in certain key directions of this research domain, but without any claim to completeness (which would be a difficult task to achieve). The general aim is to leave the reader with a view of what has been accomplished over a few decades, and with an appreciation of the major challenges that are still facing investigators of magnetic field effects. Theoretical frameworks of analysis are also included, with caveats about their limited quantitative applicability to experimental observations. It is hoped that this material will also spur the reader to examine particular areas of the pertinent literature in depth.

Turkey has nevertheless made a good start. Everything in Turkey dates from the establishment of the republic. There is immense pride in what has been accomplished—and justified pride. But there is a long way to go yet before Turkey can become the modern state of which her more enlightened leaders are dreaming. 

By approaching conservation in a systematic manner, it will be possible to keep track of what has been accomplished, what remains to be done, and how well the treatment works.
