FD-MS is also an effective analytical method for direct analysis of many rubber and plastic additives. Lattimer and Welch [113,114] showed that FD-MS gives excellent molecular ion spectra for a variety of polymer additives, including rubber accelerators (dithiocar-bamates, guanidines, benzothiazyl, and thiuram derivatives), antioxidants (hindered phenols, aromatic amines), p-phcnylenediamine-based antiozonants, processing oils and phthalate plasticisers. Alkylphenol ethoxylate surfactants have been characterised by FD-MS [115]. Jack-son et al. [116] analysed some plastic additives (hindered phenol AOs and benzotriazole UVA) by FD-MS. Reaction products of a p-phenylenediaminc antiozonant and d.v-9-lricoscnc (a model olefin) were assessed by FD-MS [117],... [Pg.375]

However, one of the electrical engineers at the University of California, Jack Welch, was willing to work with me, and I could use his radio antenna. So I had a student, Albert Cheung, take a look, and he looked at these dark clouds in space, and sure enough, there was ammonia. Well, since we found ammonia, we thought, we ought to look for water too, just to try this out. So the student looked, and there was water radiation. In fact it was very intense - hey, it had to be a maser, maser amplification in interstellar space And OH had already seemed to indicate something similar. [Pg.15]

From the pharaohs leading Egyptians and slaves to construct the pyramids, to Jack Welch leading the United States largest corporation into the new millennium, leadership has been the subject of considerable discussion. For centuries, theorists have attempted to determine what it takes to be a leader. All of us know a leader when we meet one, but this seemingly easy concept eludes external identification of the absolute qualities of a leader. [Pg.57]

Jack Welch, chairman and CEO of General Electric for 20 years, shows many of these traits (see Figure 19-4) ... [Pg.276]

Say what you will about the corporate world, that s where Jack Welch belongs. [Pg.277]

In fact, as a Wall Street Journal article stated, manufacturers find themselves increasingly in the service sector. " The article attributes the trend to manufacturers having to provide services because that is where the money is. Few products and services are commodities in the strictest sense. Features of the extended product can outweigh the importance of the base product, which customers can view as indistinguishable from competing brands. General Electric s former CEO, Jack Welch, also points to service development associated with hardware production as fundamental to his success at GE. ... [Pg.34]

Jack Welch, in the previously cited interview, talks about world peace projects requiring complex information technology. In his first decade as General Electric s CEO, he approved many of these projects. His term world peace refers to the over-hyped promises made to sell the projects. When the promised results were never delivered, Welch became a lot smarter and certainly more skeptical. In his second decade as CEO, only projects that produced tangible, fast results moved forward. [Pg.40]

In i960 the commercialization of LEXAN polycarbonate was well underway and our Chemical Development Operation then began looking for the next candidate for commercial development. They settled on PPO which by this time was fairly well characterized and had an attractive property profile. Around this time also a fresh Ph.D. chemical engineer from the University of Illinois) Jack Welch, was hired and soon became a key player in the development. A miniplant was soon in operation. A major hurdle to commercialization of PPO was the unavailability of the monomer, therefore an effort was mounted to find an attractive synthesis. Dr. Stephen Hamilton made the key discovery of a "hot tube" reaction which produced the monomer in high yield by simply passing phenol. rd methanol over a magnesium oxide catalyst at 400 deg. C. With a monomer process in hand a separate business... [Pg.212]

At this point in time a business decision was made by Dr. Jack Welch, the introduction of modified PPO resins which were given the name NORYL resins. The resins were projected to fill a market niche between the engineering plastics known at that time and the commodity resins. Today Noryl resin is one of the largest volume engineering thermoplastics. [Pg.213]

To counter heavyweight enthusiasts like Jack Welch (GE) and Larry Bossidy (Allied Signal) there are sharp critics of Six Sigma. Six Sigma may sound new, but critics say that it is really SPC in new clothing. Others dismiss it as another transitory management fad that will soon pass. [Pg.292]

By using one or more of these tools, an individual or a group is more likely to achieve quality, that is, meet all requirements. Why Because these methods encourage interaction, synergism, and use of both hemispheres of the participant s minds. (For an introductory discussion of the brain s hemispheres, see the subsequent section of this chapter titled Why Mind Mapping ). We know where most of the creativity, the innovation, the stuff that drives productivity lies, according to former GE Chairman Jack Welch, in the minds of those closest to the work. Creativity and iimovation lie within most of us we need catalysts to release them. [Pg.250]

Jack Welch s opinions about what makes a good manager (business leader is the term Jack prefers) is discussed in an interesting article Tichy, Noel and Ram Charan, Speed, Simplicity, Self-Confidence An Interview with Jack Welch, Harvard Business Review, September-October 1989, pp. 112-120. [Pg.28]

Jack Welch used the academy approach at GE with great success, through the establishment of the GE training center at Crotonville. At Crotonville, Welch himself was a frequent participant in sessions with all levels of management. This was a powerful way to disseminate best practices and to snpport the establishment of a unified culture at GE. [Pg.166]

Jack Welch, General Electric s famous CEO from 1980 through 2001, proclaimed a "70-70-70" globalization strategy for his company near fhe end of his tenure ... [Pg.76]
