This list provides selected reading sources for the sections of the handbook chosen from books and online resources that the authors have found helpful. It does not give an exhaustive list of the many books, journal articles and literally hundreds of website pages used when the handbook was being compiled. The literature on terrorism, terrorist groups and the war on terror can be remarkably alarmist and is often coloured by entrenched political views. It should be read with considerable circumspection.

ExPASy (Expert Protein Analysis System, www.expasy.ch) or the National Centre for Biotechnology Information (NCBI, www.ncbi.nlm.gov) websites. Both websites provide bioinformatics tools, links to sequence databases and extensive bibliographic resources. As an example of the wealth of information available on individual enzymes, at the time of writing a search based on nitrilase in the Entrez protein section of NCBI will recover more than 10000 references to nitrilase enzyme amino acid sequences. These can be rapidly screened online by organism, and the individual entries will have links to amino acid and gene sequence, relevant literature and information on protein features (such as conserved domains).

The National Institute of Standards and Technology has a Standard Reference Data Program that maintains electronic databases on Analytical chemistry, Atomic and molecular physics, Biotechnology, Chemical and crystal structure. Fluids, Materials properties. Surface data, and Thermochemical data. Some of these databases are available at moderate cost as PC products (diskettes, CD-ROMs, or Internet downloads) and some are free online systems.
