In 2004, Pizzarello and Weber studied a water-based prebiotic model of sugar syntheses from glycoaldehyde and formaldehyde in the presence of nonracemic alanine or isovaline. They demonstrated that the configuration of tetroses is affected by the chirality of the amino acid catalyst.

The use of SPME for CE has not (yet) been studied widely. Li and Weber (170) reported an off-line SPME-CE approach for the determination of barbiturates in urine and serum, utilizing a sorbent of plasticized PVC coated around a stainless steel rod. Eor extraction, the coated rod was inserted for 4 min in a Teflon tube containing 50 p.1 of sample, and next the rod was repeatedly desorbed in another Teflon tube which each time contained 5 p.1 of desorption solution. This solution was transferred to an injection vial and an aliquot was injected into the CE system (Eigure 11.19). The extraction procedure appeared to be selective and effectively allowed the handling of very small samples. 

Pioneering work by Wallingj94 established that the specificity shown by t-butoxy radical is solvent dependent. Work21 22396 on the reactions of /-butoxy radicals with a series of a-mcthylvinyl monomers has shown that polar and aromatic solvents favor abstraction over addition, and [3-scission over either addition or abstraction. Recently, Weber and Fischer418 and Tsentalovich at a/.410 reported absolute rate constants for [3-scission of r-butoxy radicals in various solvents. These studies indicate that p-scission is strongly solvent dependent while abstraction is relatively insensitive to solvent. 

Clark and Vermeulen (C8) later reported an extensive experimental study of power requirements in agitated gas-liquid systems. They correlated their data in dimensionless form as a function of fractional gas holdup, Weber number, and a geometrical factor. Their correlation is shown in Fig. 5.

The reaction between Co(III) and Ce(III) has been the subject of a detailed study in a series of papers by Sutcliffe and Weber . Of particular value is the thorough investigation of the influence of anions on the rate in perchlorate media. The reaction was followed by measuring the disappearance of Co(IIl) at its absorption maximum of 650 m/i, a wavelength where both oxidation states of cerium are transparent and Co(II) absorbs only slightly. Changes in temperature and ionic strength affect the spectrum of Ce(III) at the 296 m/i maximum, but the...
