Watering-out

The density of heavy fuels is greater than 0.920 kg/1 at 15°C. The marine diesel consumers focus close attention on the fuel density because of having to centrifuge water out of the fuel. Beyond 0.991 kg/1, the density difference between the two phases —aqueous and hydrocarbon— becomes too small for correct operation of conventional centrifuges technical improvements are possible but costly. In extreme cases of fuels being too heavy, it is possible to rely on water-fuel emulsions, which can have some advantages of better atomization in the injection nozzle and a reduction of pollutant emissions such as smoke and nitrogen oxides. [Pg.236]

The hydrolysis of as little as 0 5 ml. of the ester can be carried out in the combined reflux-distillation apparatus shown in Fig. 38 (p, 63). Pass a stream of cold water through the vertical condenser. Place in the 10 ml. pear-shaped flask 0 5 ml. of the ester, 5 ml. of 10% NaOH solution and one or two minute fragments of unglazed porcelain and heat the mixture gently for 15 minutes so that the vapours do not rise more than about half-way up the vertical water ondenser. Now run the water out of the ver ical condenser, insert a thermometer at the top, and pass water through the inclined condenser. Heat the flask sufficiently strongly to collect 1--2 ml. of distillate. This is dilute ethanol. [Pg.100]

Pour the mixture into a 500 ml. flask fitted with a steam-distillation head, and with a steam-inlet tube reaching almost to the bottom of the flask. First distil off the benzene in steam. Then place the flask in an oil-bath heated to 165-170 ", and continue the steam-distillation (2-3 hours). The /)-bromobiphenyl passes over and forms orange crystals in the water-condenser therefore run the water out of the condenser for a short while from time to time to melt the orange deposit and allow it to run into the receiver containing the distilled water. [Pg.202]

Now distil the contents of C by heating carefully over a gauze. A small initial fraction of unchanged thionyl chloride boiling at 78-80° comes over, and the temperature then rises rapidly to 194°. Directly this happens, stop the distillation, allow the condenser to drain thoroughly, and then replace G by the duplicate receiver. Run the water out of the condenser so that it acts as an air-condenser, and then continue the distillation. Collect the benzoyl chloride as the fraction boiling at 194-198°. Yield, 19 g. [Pg.241]

The catalyst needed is called sodium cyanoborohydride (NaBHaCN). It is not very common but there are few places that still sell it. It is very prone to take up water out of the air so the chemist makes sure that she doesn t leave it sitting out ail night. The method is simplicity itself. [Pg.98]

Aldehydes are more easily oxidized than alcohols which is why special reagents such as PCC and PDC (Section 15 10) have been developed for oxidizing primary alco hols to aldehydes and no further PCC and PDC are effective because they are sources of Cr(VI) but are used m nonaqueous media (dichloromethane) By keeping water out of the reaction mixture the aldehyde is not converted to its hydrate which is the nec essary intermediate that leads to the carboxylic acid... [Pg.736]

Cotton linters or wood pulp are nitrated using mixed acid followed by treatment with hot acidified water, pulping, neutralization, and washing. The finished product is blended for uniformity to a required nitrogen content. The controlling factors in the nitration process are the rates of diffusion of the acid into the fibers and of water out of the fibers, the composition of mixed acid, and the temperature (see Cellulose esters, inorganic esters). [Pg.14]

A variety of measures must be taken to assure safe and continued operation. Because the natural water table is higher than the coal seams, or the seams are natural aquifers, it is necessary to pump water out of the pit or to drill weUs around the mine and pump to reduce the water table. The Rheinische Braunkohlenwerke (Rheinbraun) pumps water at a rate of 1-1.2 x 10 m /yr. Part of this water is processed to provide drinking water for Neuss and Dusseldorf. The tendency of lignite to ignite spontaneously requires care in the amount of face that is exposed, especially in naturally dry, hot, windy climates. [Pg.154]

All of the chlorobenzenes are now produced by chlorination of benzene in the Hquid phase. Ferric chloride is the most common catalyst. Although precautions are taken to keep water out of the system, it is possible that the FeCl3H20 complex catalyst is present in most operations owing to traces of moisture in benzene entering the reactor. This FeCl3H20 complex is probably the most effective catalyst (13). [Pg.47]

Specifications. Eor fuel-grade MTBE, the typical specification of merchant product is 95 wt % minimum purity ia the United States and 98% minimum ia Europe. The maximums for impurities are usually 0.5 wt % for methanol, and 0.15 wt % for water. To maintain quaUty, fuel-grade MTBE is normally stored ia fixed-roof tanks, to keep rain water out, with internal floaters, to minimise vapor losses. [Pg.429]

Container Insulation Tanks containing materials above atmospheric temperature may require insulation to reduce loss of heat. Almost any of the commonly used insulating materials can be employed. Calcium silicate, glass fiber, mineral wool, cellular glass, and plastic foams are among those used. Tanks exposed to weather must have jackets or protective coatings, usually asphalt, to keep water out of the insulation. [Pg.1018]

Water contamination in the oil system can cause serious damage to turbomachinery, and every reasonable effort should be made to, first, prevent its entrance into the system, and second, provide suitable removal equipment if water cannot be effectively kept out. Experience indicates that designers and equipment operators can be more effective in keeping water out of the system. Since the main sources of contamination are atmospheric condensation, steam leaks, and faulty oil coolers, preventive measures should be taken. [Pg.551]

FIGURE 19.3 Just as a water pump must be primed with water to get more water out, the glycolytic pathway is primed with ATP iu steps 1 and 3 iu order to achieve net production of ATP iu the second phase of the pathway. [Pg.613]

Range the temperature difference between the warm water into the tower and the cold water out. The range determines the heat load on the tower, which in turn reflects the requirements of the cooling water service. The... [Pg.382]

Mass of water in is equal to mass of water out, since the enriched air with oxygen should have only 1% humidity. Therefore the mass of humid air can be calculated as tie element. [Pg.235]

This is easily accomplished by running the water out of the condenser, while heating to no°. [Pg.71]
