Water transfer region

Wang et al. [140] presented another example of multilayered MPLs that consisted of a basic MPL (Vulcan XC-72 and PTFE) on top of a DL and a mixfure of carbon black (Black Pearl 2000) and Nafion sprayed onfo fhe peripheral region of the MPL (i.e., around the active area). Tliis was done on both the anode and cathode sides. The extra MPL, also called a water transfer region (WTR), was used in order for fhe MEA to be self-humidified. The WTR would receive the excess water at the cathode and then the water... [Pg.245]

The general tendency in aqueous organic solvents (11) is for the free energies of transfer to be monotonic functions of solvent composition. Often the enthalpy of transfer shows a maximum in the water-rich region, and for salts of small ions there may be a further reversal in the organic-rich region. [Pg.303]

We suggest therefore that for a minimum to occur in the standard free energy of transfer function of a solute in aqueous binaries we need a structural (nonspecific) effect (related here to the hydrophobic character of the cation) in the water-rich region and superposed to it, classical solute-solvent interactions with predominant water-solute interactions. [Pg.319]

The terminal electron acceptor of PS I is the 11-kDa, water-soluble ferredoxin (Fd) present in the chloroplast stroma. The ultimate electron source for Fd reduction is water, transferred by way of cytochrome bj and the PS-I electron carriers (see Fig. 1). The transferred electron finally goes to reduce NADP to NADPH, which is needed for CO2 fixation. Reduction of NADP is mediated by the enzyme ferredoxin- NADP -reductase, or FNR, boundd to the outer surface of the non-appressed region of the thylakoid membrane. [Pg.621]

The boundary conditions used in conjunction with the above equations can vary and are to some degree simulation dependent. Normally, the current density, water flux, reference potential, and water chemical potential are specified but two water chemical potentials or the potential drop in the membrane can also be used. If modeling more regions than just a membrane, additional mass balances and internal boundary conditions must be specified. In addition, for modeling the membrane in the catalyst layers, rate equations are required for kinetics and water transfer among its various phases [40]. The above equations are also valid only for the steady-state case (the time-dependent terms have been ignored). [Pg.166]

Merocyanines (5) undergo a red shift of their electronic absorption maximum on micellization, the degree of which increases with the hydrophobicity of the alkyl group. This implies solubilization in a water-poor region in both cationic and anionic co-micelles. Pyridinium iodide (6) has a charge-transfer absorption band in its u.v. spectrum, but only above the c.m.c., and the frequency suggests a polarity in the environment of the head-group similar to that of ethanol. ... [Pg.182]

Several Russian writers with a nationalist/populist/environmentalist orientation also played an important role opposing the river diversion projects, both European and Siberian (Darst, 1988). These writers saw the water transfer projects as a threat not only to the character and integrity of the environment of northern European Russia and Western Siberian, but to traditional culture and village life in these regions. They opposed sending precious Siberian water to Central Asia where, in their view, it would only be wasted. Their writings often had racist overtones toward the indigenous Central Asian populations. [Pg.1523]

In March 1988, an article in the Uzbek party and government paper, Pravda Vostoka, by the president of the Uzbek Academy of Sciences and the director of the Central Asian Irrigation Research Institute stated that the ecological and socioeconomic difficulties of the Aral region could not be solved without diversion of water from Siberian rivers Pravda Vostoka, 3 March 1988 3). In October 1988, a national water management expert stated that water resources in the Aral Sea basin would be exhausted no later than 2005, in spite of comprehensive and successful efforts to improve water usage efficiency and that since 15 years would be required to complete the Siberian water transfer project, work on it needed to be started soon Pravda Vostoka, 10 October 1988 3). [Pg.1526]

Moreover, titanate nanotubes can adsorb functional cations from aqueous solution, which may in turn provide a strategy for the deposition of active catalysts on the surface of nanotubes [43]. In addition, when nanoparhcles and htanate nanotubes have good electrical contacts, it can provide an efficient interfacial charge-transfer region, which makes this binary system also suitable for photocatalysis. In photocatalyhc processes, the photosensibilizer could be either wide-bandgap titanate nanotubes [44] or narrow-bandgap semiconductor nanoparhcles [45, 46]. At present, these studies are shU in the early stages of research, but will undoubtedly find applicahons in nanofiltrahon membranes for water heatment. [Pg.290]
