Hard water contains metallic ions, such as magnesium or calcium ions, that interact with soap to form insoluble films or scum. While water pollution by substances difficult to degrade (lead, arsenic, manganese, cadmium) almost exclusively comes from industrial sources, more and more products of the chemical industry used in households and in agriculture are contributing to water pollution. The water that flows through your faucet has been treated to remove, or limit, a large number of pollutants. It is far from pure, however. For example, it still contains dissolved ions, such as Ca2+(aq), Mg2+(aq), Fe2+(aq), Fe3+(aq), and S042-(aq). These ions, especially calcium and magnesium, make it difficult to form lather with soap. Water with high concentrations of these ions is called hard water, partly because it is hard to lather. Water with relatively low concentrations of these ions lathers well. Polymerization reactions take place within each droplet. In emulsion polymerization, monomers, water, initiator and soap (5 per cent by weight of mixture) are stirred together (Brydson, 1999). The monomer forms droplets which are surrounded and protected by soap molecules while polymerization takes place. Emulsion polymerization is a low-polluting, low-flammabUity technique but soap residues adversely affect the appearance and electrical properties of the final product. [Pg.46]
