Water exclusion

Liquids that form conducting solutions are called ionizing solvents. A few other compounds (ammonia, NH3i sulfur dioxide, S02, sulfuric acid, H2SO<, etc.) are ionizing solvents but water is by far the most important. We will discuss water exclusively but the same ideas apply to the other solvents in which ions form. [Pg.169]

The vertical distribution of pollutants originates from water movements and sinking of organic particulate matter operating as carriers for lipophilic substances. PFOA enters ocean water exclusively in the surface level and instantaneously establishes... [Pg.70]

One of the rare applications of selenium-substituted allenes was recently reported by Ma et al. [182]. The allenyl selenide 352 undergoes an iodohydroxylation or iodo-amination, depending on the amount of water used, leading to the formation of allyl alcohol 353 and allylacetamide 354 (Scheme 8.97). When the reaction is performed with 12-16 equiv. of water, allyl alcohol 353 is exclusively formed, whereas the use of 1 equiv. of water exclusively provides the amide 354 in 64% yield. [Pg.485]

At atmospheric pressure, sulfuric acid has a maximum boiling azeotrope at approximately 98.48% (78,79). At 25°C, the minimum vapor pressure occurs at 99.4% (78). Data and a discussion on the azeotropic composition of sulfuric acid as a function of pressure can also be found in these two references. The vapor pressure exerted by sulfuric acid solutions below the azeotrope is primarily from water vapor above the azeotropic concentration S03 is the primary component of the vapor phase. The vapor of sulfuric acid solutions between 85% H2S04 and 35% free S03 is a mixture of sulfuric acid, water, and sulfur trioxide vapors. At the boiling point, sulfuric acid solutions containing <85% H2S04 evaporate water exclusively those containing >35% free S03 (oleum) evaporate exclusively sulfur trioxide. [Pg.180]

Our discussion up to now has concerned the cooling of hot process waters exclusively. However, we insisted back in Chapter 1 that a cooling tower is nothing more than a device that transfers heat from one mass to another. Therefore, gas coolers are governed by the same theory of operation and design principles as are water cooling towers. [Pg.150]

Before we could take up this study in general, we had to solve one of the more bothersome aspects of cyclodextrin chemistry. It was believed strongly that cyclodextrin would bind substrates only in pure water solution, and this was a serious defect. First of all, it severely restricted the range of substrates that could be examined, since many interesting molecules have low water solubility. As a second point, it made it difficult to examine another feature of enzyme-catalyzed reactions. One of the roles that can be ascribed to the large protein mass, which contains the functional groups of an enzyme, is the function of water exclusion. That is, enzyme reactions can be considered to be operating in a nonaqueous or only partially aqueous medium. [Pg.12]

Interestingly, the indium-mediated reactions of crotyl or cinnamyl bromide with aldehydes in the presence of 10 M water exclusively give the a-adducts regardless of the bulkiness of aldehydes (Scheme 6).105,106 NMR study has proved that the initially formed y-homoallylic alcohol is converted to the thermodynamic a-homoallylic alcohol. [Pg.653]

Water-cement ratio The ratio of the amount of water, exclusive to that absorbed by the aggregates, to the amount of cement in a concrete or mortar mix. [Pg.223]

The following Swern oxidation is an inexpensive, mild and fast transformation. It provides aldehydes starting from primary alcohols in the absence of water, exclusively. Other mild oxidation methods for the formation of aldehydes are known Dess-Martin periodinane (DMP), o-iodoxybenzoic acid (IBX), chromium(III) reagents, tetramethylpiperidine 7V-oxide and sodium hypochlorite (TEMPO/NaOCl), tetrapropylammonium perruthenate and N-methylmorpholine 7V-oxide (TPAP/NMO), " and palladium(II)-catalyzed oxidations are reported. ... [Pg.249]

Severe engineering barriers are correlated to the very high temperatures necessary to split water exclusively by heat, together with the problems connected to heat extraction and thermal management. These problems require the practical... [Pg.47]

On the basis of the results of the dynamics simulation of liquid water it turns out that the VB like wavefunction based on the SCF-MI non-orthogoml occupied and virtual orbitals, describes accurately the intermolecular potential of water. Exclusion of BSSE in an <7priori fashion is ensured and geometry relaxation effects are naturally taken into account. [Pg.282]

Schom et al. (22) also proved that it is feasible to use HFIP with sodium trifluoroacetate, unmodified silica columns, and low-angle laser light-scattering detection for direct MW measurement of nylon 6. They also showed that spikes can be minimized in the LALLS signal by water exclusion, filtration, and a data-smoothing technique. [Pg.168]

In both PWRs and BWRs, corrosion of the primary circuit materials is an essential factor in the buildup of contamination layers on the surfaces of the pipes and the components. The materials used in BWRs which are in contact with the reactor water and, therefore, are potential sources of radionuclides are mainly stainless steels wear-resistant hardfacing alloys such as Stellite are also present in most of the plants. Zircaloy as the material of fuel rod claddings, spacers and fuel assembly casks need not be considered in this context, because of the extremely small release of activated constituents from this material. Due to differences in temperature and environment, the mechanisms of the corrosion process and the resulting metal release rates, which contribute to the input of corrosion products into the region of the reactor core, may show differences in different regions of the plant. Thus, corrosion of materials in the water-steam cycle exhibiting H2O phase transformations and considerable temperature differences will proceed differently than in the recirculation lines and the reactor water cleanup system, which are in contact with liquid water exclusively and show comparatively small variations in operating temperature. [Pg.341]

Hydrogels with hydrophilic functional groups swell in water exclusively as a result of polymer—water interaction forces. Overall, three forces expand the hydrogel network polymer—water interactions, electrostatic interactions, and osmosis. In other words, infinite solubility of hydrogels is prevented by elastic forces, which originate... [Pg.208]

If this mechanism is correct, we can predict that the required inversion in the opening of the cyclic ion must produce a trans stereochemistry in the products. So, we have the opportunity to test the mechanism, and it turns out that addition of Br2 (or CI2) to cyclohexene in the solvent water exclusively produces the compound resulting from anti addition in which the bromine (or chlorine) and... [Pg.418]

MESI, TMD, and MIMS suffer from a limited range of applications limited to apolar volatile compoimds. The limitation results from the usage of PDMS-membrane. MESI, TMD, and P T were compared by Matz et al. [196]. P T offers a simple set-up, high throughput, and good sensitivity, but it suffers in poor extraction of polar compounds and the trapped water, which induces chromatographic problems. MESI does not suffer from trapped water, but its memory effect is its main drawback. On the other hand, TMD is adequate for polar compoimds and does not show the advantage of water exclusion. [Pg.643]

In conclusion, the MMRS allowed reaction process investigation under inert, that is, oxygen and water exclusion, as well as under superheated conditions with significantly accelerated reaction rates. Again, a number of parameters could be altered and monitored over a small amount of time. This led to a straightforward optimization of the process parameters at difficult reaction conditions. [Pg.80]
