In the United States about 3 percent of all electricity produced comes from renewable sources of this a little more than half comes from biomass. Most biomass energy generation comes from the lumber and paper industries from their conversion of mill residues to in-house energy. Municipal solid waste also is an important fuel for electricity production approximately 16 percent ot all municipal solid waste is disposed of by combustion. Converting industrial and municipal waste into bioenergy also decreases the necessity for landfdl space. [Pg.158]

Cresols have been identified as components of automobile exhaust (Hampton et al. 1982 Johnson et al. 1989 Seizinger and Dimitriades 1972), and may volatilize from gasoline and diesel fuels used to power motor vehicles. Vehicular traffic in urban and suburban settings provides a constant source of cresols to the atmosphere. Hence, urban and suburban populations may be constantly exposed to atmospheric cresols. Cresols are also emitted to ambient air during the combustion of coal (Junk and Ford 1980), wood (Hawthorne et al. 1988, 1989), municipal solid waste (James et al. 1984 Junk and Ford 1980), and cigarettes (Arrendale et al. 1982 Novotny et al. 1982). Therefore, residents near coal- and petroleum-fueled electricity- generating facilities, municipal solid waste incinerators, and industries with conventional furnace operations or large-scale incinerators may be exposed to cresols in air. People in residential areas where homes are heated with coal, oil, or wood may also be exposed to cresols in air. [Pg.127]

Anthropogenic sources of fluoride include fossil fuel combustion and industrial waste. Hydrogen fluoride is water soluble and emissions are readily controlled by acid gas scrubbers. HF emission from coal combustion, that is considered to be the main anthropogenic source of HF, was estimated to be 0.18 Tg annually emission of HF from the combustion of petroleum and natural gas is almost certainly negligible [24]. Apparently only limited data are available concerning total annual emissions of HF from industrial operations however, there is evidence that emissions of fluorides have been declining [24,25]. [Pg.492]

Over the last few decades, safety has become one of the most important topics related to food. From this view, quality control of vegetable raw materials has at first to cover the following issues natural and anthropogenic contaminants (e.g. heavy metals, pollution from industrial and private combustions, not professionally deposited waste products, radionuclides), residues of fertilisers (e.g. nitrate), plant-conditioning and plant-protective agents, filth, pests, the microbial status and the occurrence of microbial toxins. Air quality is important from both a health and a safety perspective. In the USA, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration set limits of exposure to over 2000 different chemicals or classes of respiratory irritants [11, 12], Many of the compounds that are monitored indoors are of similar interest to outdoor assessment, such as in the atmosphere and stratosphere. In working with nuclear power, one of the problems that they have is that they don t have an acceptable solution for the wastes, and that industry right now is at a standstill. [Pg.230]
