Customers as well as corporations continue to put on pressure to reduce warehouse costs. Every time a facility handles a piece of material, it takes human work effort to complete it. The likelihood of error, which could result in injuries, grows as a result of increased demands for speed, accuracy, productivity, and value-added services. On-time deliveries at over 99 percent are expected by customers.

Individual countries within the European Community handle the battery waste problem differently. For example, in Switzerland all used consumer batteries are considered hazardous waste and must be collected separately from ordinary household waste. Batteries must be recycled or stored in warehouses, not landfilled. A tax is collected on all new battery purchases to help defray the cost of recycling. In Italy, spent dry batteries are considered as hazardous waste and must be collected separately. In Sweden (10), the environmental issues relatii to waste batteries are addressed in the Control of Chemicals Bill and in the Decree on Environmentally Hazardous Batteries. All used batteries containing cadmium or mercury are collected separately under government control. The cadmium is then recycled. Regulations are in place for the manufacture of nickel/cadmium cells, limiting the exposure of workers and the emission of toxic materials. 

Rating the layout of the warehouse is based on how well these objectives are met. Effective use of space for storage, operational, and support functions is considered here. The transport and storage of material is analyzed to determine how well the layout supports reduced handling costs and increased labor productivity.

What is the industry supply chain cost associated with these days of finished goods inventory One study su ested that the cost of this inventory is 5% of industry sales. This cost reflects additional investments in property plant and equipment, warehouse capacity and material handling, financing charges for inventories, and additional costs for premium transportation. 

Okuma requires each of its forty-six distributors to carry a minimal number of machine tools and selected repair parts in inventory. A shared information system keeps distributors informed about the location and availability of all tools and parts throughout the system. If a distributor does not have a part, he can check to find the closest location with the part. The item can then be shipped directly to the customer plant site for availability the next day. Since all inventories are posted on the information system, called Okumalink, distributors can arrange exchanges of parts electronically. This decreases the inventory and handling costs for all distributors while offering forty-eight potential paths for items to be shipped to the customer, i.e., Okuma s two warehouses and the forty-six distributors. The low stockout rates increases the customer confidence in spare part availability and potentially benefits the initial sale of Okuma machine tools to customers.
