Ward studies

Johannsmann et al. have reported the use of quartz crystal electrical impedance to study the viscoelastic properties of poly(y-methyl-L-glutama-te-co-y-zi-octadecyl-L-glutamate) thin films [65, 66] and Ward studied the viscoelastic characteristics of poly-styrene films with 2-chloro-toluene solvent by measuring the admittance near resonance at 5 MHz of the unloaded quartz resonator and the composite resonator [67].

In the wards studied there has not been any significant increase or decrease in patient bed-stay.

Ward (Ref 15) and Brown and Williams (Ref 16) studied nitrobenzene with radiation > 3300A using tetrahydrofuran (THF) as solvent in degassed solns. The effects of low temp were also studied. Daw et al. [632] made a microscopic and crystallographic study of talc dehydroxylation. Nucleation, to yield enstatite, occurs inhomogeneously within the particles, perhaps at dislocations. However, the observations of Ward and Sherman need not rule out triple-bond participation and vinyl cations in the systems studied by Hanack and co-workers (75-79). Presumably, the enol formate 61 itself arises via a transition state involving a rate-determining protonation and vinyl cation 62 (see previous section). A vinyl cation such as 62 with an adjacent phenyl group is considerably more stable and hence more accessible than a vinyl cation such as 63, stabilized only by a neighboring alkyl group. One of the most potent routes for transmission of bacterial disease is via the air. Cross-infeetion in hospital wards, infeetion in operating theatres, the transmission of disease in elosed spaces such as cinemas and other places of assembly, in the ward rooms and erew s quarters of ships and in submarines are all well known. Of equal importance is the provision of a bacteria-fiee environment for aseptic manipulations generally. Clearly, the disinfeetion of atmospheres is a worthwhile field of study and to this end much research has been done. It is equally clearly important to be able to evaluate preparations claimed to be air disinfeetants.

These compounds have been the subject of several theoretical [7,11,13,20)] and experimental[21] studies. Ward and Elliott [20] measured the dynamic y hyperpolarizability of butadiene and hexatriene in the vapour phase by means of the dc-SHG technique. Waite and Papadopoulos[7,ll] computed static y values, using a Mac Weeny type Coupled Hartree-Fock Perturbation Theory (CHFPT) in the CNDO approximation, and an extended basis set. Kurtz [15] evaluated by means of a finite perturbation technique at the MNDO level [17] and using the AMI [22] and PM3[23] parametrizations, the mean y values of a series of polyenes containing from 2 to 11 unit cells. At the ab initio level, Hurst et al. [13] and Chopra et al. [20] studied basis sets effects on and y. It appeared that diffuse orbitals must be included in the basis set in order to describe correctly the external part of the molecules which is the most sensitive to the electrical perturbation and to ensure the obtention of accurate values of the calculated properties.
