Harvesting. Except for the cotton gin, the introduction of the mechanical harvester has probably had a greater effect on cotton production than any other single event. Commercial mechanical harvesters were introduced into the United States after World War 11. By 1955, about 23% of the cotton was mechanically harvested. That value had increased to 85% by 1965. In the early 1990s more than 99% of the U.S. cotton crop was mechanically harvested, although cotton was stiH hand harvested in some other countries. 

The condenser was mechanically cleaned every 6 months. Heavy deposition due to silt, sand, and mud plagued this system. 

The most frequent loss mechanism (43%) was mechanical failure of equipment which was second in terms of average loss at 72,100,000 (Figure 7.1-4). Operational error was the second most frequent cause of loss (21%), but it had the highest average loss ( 87,400,000).

There has been a real revolution in instrumentation hardware in the last several decades. Twenty years ago, most control hardware was mechanical and pneumatic (using instrument air pressure to drive gadgets and for control signals). Selection of visible light reflectance as a candidate nondestructive test method was based on results from probing experiments. SYNTHESIS To a solution of 64.8 g of o-cresol and 56 g dimethyl sulfoxide in 300 mL EtjO, cooled with an external ice bath with vigorous stirring, there was added 40 mL chlorosulfonic acid dropwise over the course of 30 min.
