To a solution of 2.31 g (10 mmol) or tert-butyl Ar-(tfr -buloxycarbonyl)glyeinate in 40 mL of dry CC14 is added 1.78 g (10 mmol) of A-bromosuccinimidc and the mixture is irradiated with a 500-W lamp at 20°C (water cooling) for 1 h. The succinimide is filtered off and the filtrate is concentrated to dryness in vacuo. The residual oil crystallizes on drying in vacuo to give the product in nearly analytical purity yield 3.0 g (97%) mp 55 X. The producl is stable when kept under argon in the refrigerator, and can be used in subsequent steps without further purification. [Pg.816]

St., Newark 5, New Jersey 07105. The lamp was suspended vertieally in a cylindrical, double-walled, Pyrex jacket cooled by flowing water. The inside diameter, outside diameter, and length of the cooling jacket were 3, 4, and 22 cm., respectively. The cooling jacket was clamped in place ca. 5 cm. from the reaction vessel to allow the cooling bath to be raised into position. The use of the 200-W. lamp did not alter the reaction time. [Pg.234]

In a preliminary study, in situ generated B-alkylcatecholboranes were allowed to react with PTOC-OMe under irradiation with a standard 150 W lamp. The S-pyridyl products coming from primary, secondary and tertiary alkyl radicals were isolated in moderate to good yields [88]. Based on these initial results, a procedure for conjugate addition to various activated alkenes was developed. A one-pot procedure involving hydroboration of an alkene with catecholborane followed by irradiation in the presence of five equivalents of an activated alkene and three equivalents of the chain transfer reagent PTOC-OMe was developed (Scheme 36) [88]. [Pg.100]

However, when the irradiation is carried out with 1 mol of phosphite under mild conditions (100 W lamp instead of 450 W) only one carbonyl is replaced and R3SiH is also formed. ... [Pg.91]

P(CH2QH5)3, P(SC6Hs)3, PPh(allyl)2, P(allyl)3, PPh(l-Np)2, PMePh 1-Np. Cyclo-metalation is possible with PPh(CH2CH2Ph)2 and P(0-totyl)3, the former compound yielding a six-membered ring and the latter undergoing metalation at an sp carbon atom. However, drastic conditions are necessary (450 w lamp). The results obtained reveal that ... [Pg.93]
