Voids Are Important

An important class of ceramic composites are materials in which voids (pores) of various shapes and volumes are created in a controlled manner. In these materials, the properties of these empty spaces are combined with those of the ceramic solid phase. There is also a great potential in materials in which the solid phase is just a framework for liquids or gases performing important functions. [Pg.51]


The total amount of water used in the mix influences the volume of pore spaces. In order to complete the hydration of the cement, water equal to approximately 25% of the weight of the cement is required. However, this amount is not sufficient to permit placing of the concrete mix. To make the mix fluid, an additional 25% is added making a total water/cement ratio of 0.5. After hardening, this excess water evaporates out of the mix, contributing to void formation. These voids are important because the porosity is responsible for the adsorption of water into the bulk mass. [Pg.166]

Crystallinity and disorder are important structural parameters for understanding relationships between structure and physical properties. Flaws and distortions are the main features that limit the ultimate properties of textile fibers. Some of these crazes, cracks and voids are revealed under the electron microscope, either on the surface or in cross sections stained with heavy metals (J, 2). However, these staining techniques (that reveal the main morphological features) make it much more difficult to determine the degree of distortion of the crystalline fraction. Theoretically, line profile studies permit separation of effects due to crystalline size from those due to structural distortions.
