Viscoelastic damping devices

The first of these innovations is called the hybrid passive control device (HPCD). The HPCD consists of a BRB in series with a viscoelastic damping device. For small deformadmis, only the viscoelastic damper is active. After a specified displacement, the viscoelastic device locks out and the BRB becomes active. The device was tested in the laboratory and implemented in analytical models of a nine-story structure. Experimental testing showed the concept worked as designed. The building response to a suite of earthquakes was improved, and residual displacements were reduced when compared to a BRB frame (Marshall and Chamey 2010a, b). [Pg.326]

Although EVDs used in the engineering practice usually require two or more Maxwell s elements to capture their dynamic behavior, the simplest case of a single Maxwell s element (i.e., N = 1) can be effectively used to assess the effects of the relaxation time Ti on the seismic performance of a building structure retrofitted with viscoelastic devices. The resulting governing equations for a SDoF oscillator equipped with additional viscoelastic damping then become... [Pg.1860]

Piezoelectric acoustic wave devices also respond to small changes in mass at surfaces immersed in (viscous) liquids [9]. The resonance frequency of AT-cut quartz resonators immersed in liquids depends on the liquid density and viscosity. The transverse shear wave which penetrates into the viscoelastic deposit and into the liquid is damped due to energy dissipation associated with the viscosity of the medium (film or liquid) at the acoustic frequencies. [Pg.462]

Conclusions. Results from the biocompatibility studies in rabbit supratellar bursa, measurement of hydrophilic properties, lubrication and wear in-vitro studies, determination of viscoelastic properties, measurement of damping coefficient and impact test, total elbow joint replacement design and in-vivo percutaneous implant experiment, all indicate that this series of polyurethanes is an excellent candidate biomaterial for the prosthetic replacement of articular cartilage, artificial joint prostheses and percutaneous implantable devices. [Pg.502]

Dashpot dash- pat (1861) n. (1) A device used for damping vibration and cushioning shock in hydraulic systems. Typically, a dashpot is a liquid- or gas-filled cylinder with a piston that is attached to a moving machine part. (2) A modeling concept useful in visualizing the mechanical behavior of viscoelastic materials, a purely viscous element that may operate alone or connected in series and/or parallel with springs and sliders. [Pg.258]
