Owing to the substantial body of knowledge that has now been developed in this field (with seminal contributions from a number of research groups, including those of Vicente, Parish, Abram, Fuchita, Minghetti, Manassero and Cinellu, to name but a few) it has not been possible to be fully comprehensive. Instead, an attempt has been made to survey the main types of cycloaurated complexes that have been synthesised by various methods, and to report on the use of these complexes as substrates for further reactivity studies. 

Studies into the mechanism of C-H activation of acetone have been reported,70 including isolation of some intermediates.72 This area has been summarised in a review by Vicente and Chicote73 on the acac method for the synthesis of gold complexes.

Lipases are usually active in aqueous systems as well as in organic solvents which makes them applicable not only for hydrolytic reactions but also for esterifications and transesterifications or for the formation of amides. These enzymes are known to accept a wide variety of substrates quite often with high enantioselectivity which makes them useful for chiral organic substrates. Numerous molecular modeling studies during the last decade describe these phenomena and provide us today with a clear picture of the mechanisms behind the enzymatic reaction particularly of CALB. Vicente Gotor, Karl Hult, and Romas J. Kazlauskas are three of the most cited names in this regard who have contributed fantastic work in this field.

We also reported the fer-polymerization strategy with the intent to combine DES (diethylstilboestrol), which is a diol, into the polymer backbone [23]. Hydrolytic degradation studies with these bioresponsive polymers showed an enhanced rate of hydrolysis of the polymer backbone at pH 5.5, in which 65% of DES was released over 96h, in comparison to pH 7.4, where only 4% of DES was released during the same time [23]. This DES containing ter-polyacetal has continued to be developed by Vicent etal. [32,71]. 

A year later, Blacque and Freeh [24c] performed comprehensive DFT studies on the thermal feasibility of Pd /Pd cycles in pincer-catalyzed Heck reactions and convincingly showed that pincer-type Pd intermediates are indeed thermally accessible with aryl bromides at elevated temperatures and hence are generally to be considered as reactive intermediates in pincer-catalyzed reactions with aryl halides at elevated reaction temperatures (for details, see below). Shortly thereafter, Vicente and coworkers [41] published the first oxidative addition of an aryl iodide on the metal center of a paUadium(II) pincer complex 2-iodobenzoic acid was found to smoothly undergo oxidative addition on the paLladium(II) center of [(ONC)Pd(OAc)]...
