Versus Choice

Most professionals agree that there are biological and biochemical processes that can increase the possibility of medication dependence. Many clients avoid using medications whenever possible because they fear that they will become addicted, but the reality is quite different. When using medication there is a continuum of use that goes beyond the simplistic notion that the medication either worked or it didn t. Certain drugs in themselves present unique properties that determine how often they will be taken. [Pg.37]

On the other hand, many drugs have properties that can result in overall therapeutic effects and side effects that are unique to the individual and [Pg.37]

There is one major difference with over-the-counter drugs addiction does not rest with getting high from the medication, but rather stems from taking the medication longer than expected and developing a need to continue taking it. Addiction can be defined as simply abstinence syn- [Pg.38]

The social work professional with a solid knowledge of medication usage and misuse can also help clients integrate situational or environmental concerns that may not be listed in the PDR. Furthermore, the role of nonprescription medications and their effects on the body, especially in terms of the potential for addiction, should not be underestimated.
