Vehicle material mass

The shredder shreds the vehicle into approximately fist-sized chunks. The ferrous metals are separated using a magnet and recycled in electric arc furnaces. The nonferrous metals are separated using a variety of techniques and recycled as individual materials. The remainder, including most of the polymers, is sent to landfill. Currently about 75% of a vehicle, by mass, (more for a truck) is metal and gets recycled. [Pg.728]

The application of a selective pyrolysis process to the recovery of chemicals from waste PU foam is described. The reaction conditions are controlled so that target products can be collected directly from the waste stream in high yields. Molecular beam mass spectrometry is used in small-scale experiments to analyse the reaction products in real time, enabling the effects of process parameters such as temperature, catalysts and co-reagents to be quickly screened. Fixed bed and fluidised bed reactors are used to provide products for conventional chemical analysis to determine material balances and to test the concept under larger scale conditions. Results are presented for the recycling of PU foams from vehicle seats and refrigerators. 12 refs. [Pg.79]

The tires account for two-thirds by mass of the elastomer used in an automobile [1]. However, the usage of lightweight steel cord and technical improvements in elastomeric materials have reduced their weight by -20% and this in turn has led to an overall reduction in vehicle weight, concomitant fuel savings, and better road holding property. [Pg.1023]

The primary mission of the Decontamination Element is to turn chemical/biological victims into patients through mass decontamination procedures by establishing a site capable of providing initial and sustained operational decontamination of Force personnel (rescue workers), ambulatory, and non-ambulatory patients. The Decontamination Element also handles decontamination of CBIRF members, attachments, vehicles, and equipment that have entered the incident site controls access into and out of the incident site handles processing of surety material and evidence while maintaining chain of custody through the site and handles limited area decontamination of the incident site. [Pg.208]

Diesel particle filters are a very efficient means of reducing PM mass emissions from diesel vehicles, but do not directly target NOx. However, most diesel particulate filter (DPF) systems contain catalytic materials which assist in the DPF regeneration (the combustion of PM accumulated on the filter to clean the DPF and prevent blockage). Such catalytic materials can have a similar impact to DOCs... [Pg.39]
