Valve assemblies

A mechanical device embodying a bellows-sealed needle valve with a lever reduction movement for fine control is shown in Fig. II, 23, 5. The needle is of stainless steel. This fine control valve assembly is useful for pressures ranging from 20 to 100 mm. of mercury when used in conjunction with a good water pump. 

The time the plant is down for a cylinder change may be reduced, and cylinder life increased, if the cylinder with worn packings is removed from the compressor in its entirety and replaced with one which has been assembled with care in a clean environment. Alternatively, with some designs it is possible to replace the packing cups and valve assembly as a complete cartridge. 

To avoid this situation, some regulators are designed with a built-in over-pressure relief mechanism. Over-pressure relief circuits usually are composed of a spring-opposed diaphragm and valve assembly that vents the downstream piping when the control pressure rises above the set point pressure.

A service gauge is usually fitted adjacent to the valve or as part of the valve assembly, to facilitate setting or readjustment. Above about 40 mm pipe size, the basic back pressure regulation valve is used as a pilot to operate a main servo valve. Other pilot signals can be used on the same servo. 

With careful design and exacting construction these types of valves can be extremely efficient. In practice, to ensure absolute minimum back flow through the valve, a single non-return valve assembly usually contains two non-return ball valves connected in series as shown in figure 6.

The produced oil or gas is connected to surface flowlines from the wellhead pumping unit or surface regulating valve assembly typically referred to as a Christmas tree but to its arrangement. The flowlines collect the oil or gas to local tank batteries or central production facilities for primary oil, water, and gas separation. The only thing that this frequendy specified test will prove is that the valve assembly can withstand the cold temperature, but not that the valve can actually operate on the field in cold or cryogenic circumstances. 

The regulator is limited to operating on processes with clean, nonslurry process fluids. The small orifice and valve assemblies contained in the regulator can plug and malfunction if the process fluid that operates the regulator is not sufficiently clean.
