Use of Robax as Oven and Fireplace Sight Panels

Its characteristics render Robax virtually a material predestined for the user as sight panels capable of sustaining high temperatures. Thus, this glass ceramic is used for sight and protective panels in combustion furnaces (e.g., for wood, coal, oil, gas), industrial furnaces, and electrically powered furnaces, and for cover panels in front of open fireplaces . [Pg.92]

In practical use, the oven and fireplace sight panels are subjected to stresses mainly by the corrosive effects of the oven atmosphere due to the combustion of, for example, fuel (so-called micro-crazing). The intensity of the said stresses is a function of the influential factors compiled in Table 3.6. [Pg.93]

Corrosive stress may bring about undue damage to the sight panel. This may cause the sight panel to lose its transparency as a result of cloudiness or deposits, or the surface attack may lower the mechanical load capacity to an inadmissibly heavy extent. Typical attack phenomena are deposits or pitting and microcracks. [Pg.93]

Each of the methods referred to is suited for comparing various glass ceramics with each other regarding their chemical resistance within the furnace atmospheres known, and for a determination of the most appropriate material. As far as experience has shown so far, those glass ceramics which proved best in these experiments correspondingly stand the test of time in practical use. From such test results, however, one cannot make any statement on the time at which initial surface damage is likely to occur in practice. [Pg.94]
