Many waters from mountainous uplands such as Wales, Scotland, Yorkshire, or the moors of southwest England are surface mnoff and have not percolated through mineral strata. They are low in minerals generally, and hardness and alkalinity in particular, though even there the hardness... 

Upland waters of low hardness, as supplied to most towns in Scotland, Wales and the North of England. 

Soft upland waters are aggressive to most metals, their behaviour depending to some extent on pH values as discussed on p. 2.53. They are inevitably unsaturated with respect to calcium carbonate and it is not usually practicable to modify the carbonate equilibrium to make them non-aggressive.

Upland surface water. This is low in hardness salts having run over impervious rocks but will often be high in organic matter, i.e. fulvic and humic acids. 

Clean rivers. These originate from upland surface waters, but contain more organic matter and also silt.

The coca bush Erythroxylon coca, native to upland rain forest areas of Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and western Brazil, is the source of the alkaloid cocaine. 

Many alkaloids have pronounced biological properties, and a substantial number of the pharmaceutical agents used today are derived from naturally occurring amines. As a few examples, morphine, an analgesic agent, is obtained from the opium poppy Papaver somnifemm. Cocaine, both an anesthetic and a central nervous system stimulant, is obtained front the coca bush Erythroxylon coca, endemic to upland rain forest areas of Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and western Brazil. Reserpine, a tranquilizer and antihypertensive, comes from powdered roots of the semitropical plant Rauwolfia serpentina. Ephedrine, a bronchodilator and decongestant, is obtained front the Chinese plant Ephedra sinica. 

In addition to runoff, rivers transport products of upland weathering to the oceans, forming a key link in the tectonic cycle of uplift and erosion. This interaction will be explored further in Section 6.6.
