Much later—more than half a century after Carothers invented nylon— scientists at the University of California at San Diego discovered that the production of nylon seemed to contribute a small but significant amount of nitrous oxide to the atmosphere. By that time, it was well known that nitrous oxide, N20, is a potent greenhouse gas and ozone destroyer. Within a month of the discovery s publication in 1991, Du Pont and several other nylon producers announced plans to phase out nitrous oxide emissions within five years.

We used the measurements of organic carbon and uranium in a sea core, made by Paul R. Doose, Emil K. Kalil, and I. R. Kaplan of the University of California at Los Angeles, and we compared our stable isotope measurements with Hans Suess measurements of radiocarbon in the bristlecone pine ring sequence prepared by Wesley Fergusson, (see fig. 27), Suess at the University of California at San Diego, and Fergusson at the University of Arizona, Tucson. 

Theoretical, computational, and experimental research has been pursued in the area of contaminant emission. If novel control methodologies are to be developed, a thorough understanding of the mechanisms involved in the generation of these constituents must be known. To this end, as3unptotic analysis of flame structure to predict contaminant production has been successfully performed by Forman Williams at the University of California at San Diego (Chapter 25).

The papers on which the articles in this volume are based, were prepared at the invitation of the organizing committee, for presentation at the Conference on Stochastic Processes in Chemical Physics which was held at the University of California at San Diego, La Jolla, March 18-22, 1968. The purpose of this meeting was to bring together selected experts in the fields of probability theory, applied mathematics, transport processes, statistical mechanics, chemical kinetics, polymer chemistry, and molecular biochemistry for an exchange of ideas and to stimulate interest and activity in the application of the theory of stochastic processes to problems in chemical physics. 

In 1960, the Mayers moved to the University of California at San Diego, where both could finally hold full professorships, his in chemistry and hers in physics. But shortly after arrival, Maria suffered a stroke and was troubled thereafter by poor health, succumbing finally (after a prolonged coma) in 1972. While continuing collaborative theoretical chemistry studies, Joseph Mayer helped to build the newly formed UCSD chemistry faculty to national prominence. He retired and remarried, then accepted a term of presidency of the American Physical Society (1973) and continued other professional activities until his death in 1983. 

Stephen M. Stahl is Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California at San Diego. He has conducted numerous research projects awarded by the National Institute of Mental Health, the Veterans Administration, and the pharmaceutical industry. Author of more than 200 articles and chapters, Dr. Stahl is an internationally recognized clinician, researcher, and teacher in psychiatry with subspecialty expertise in psychopharmacology.
