At higher pressures only Raman spectroscopy data are available. Because the rotational structure is smoothed, either quantum theory or classical theory may be used. At a mixture pressure above 10 atm the spectra of CO and N2 obtained in [230] were well described classically (Fig. 5.11). For the lowest densities (10-15 amagat) the band contours have a characteristic asymmetric shape. The asymmetry disappears at higher pressures when the contour is sufficiently narrowed. The decrease of width with 1/tj measured in [230] by NMR is closer to the strong collision model in the case of CO and to the weak collision model in the case of N2. This conclusion was confirmed in [215] by presenting the results in universal coordinates of Fig. 5.12. It is also seen that both systems are still far away from the fast modulation (perturbation theory) limit where the upper and lower borders established by alternative models merge into a universal curve independent of collision strength.

ANTHONY reid is a Southeast Asian Historian now again based at the Australian National University, Canberra, but previously at the National University of Singapore (2002-9), where he established the Asia Research Institute, and University of California, Los Angeles (1999-2002). In the more difficult case of asymmetry in both mobilities (DA = 0, >b > 0) and initial concentrations, Sn > 0, a kind of master equation was derived and solved numerically, along with the Monte Carlo simulations [32], As it is seen in Fig. 6.26, for equal particle concentrations the decay asymptotics, shown by dashed lines, is reached very fast for both symmetrical and asymmetrical reactant mobilities (curves 1). It is no longer tme, however, for asymmetrical concentrations shown in curves 2. These latter demonstrate clearly an existence of the two different classes of universality for reactions with unequal concentrations one class corresponds to the case when both (A and B) reactants are mobile or those which are in majority whereas... 

Could that be so that the Universe was created with the preponderance of matter over antimatter We have no support for such hypothesis. Einstein remarked If that s the way God made the world then I don t want to have anything to do with Him [7]. Indeed, the contemporary Standard Model of Physics suggests that equal amounts of matter and antimatter were born during the Big-Bang. Where has the antimatter gone What causes the apparent asymmetry between matter and antimatter Obviously the antiparticles have been annihilated by particles - but apparently this process was not fully symmetric, since enough matter was left over for our Universe. We seem to be the result of an accident, caused by a a slight imperfection of Nature. 

The matter - antimatter asymmetry in the Universe and its relation to the underlying symmetries of Nature is of such fundamental importance that a number of large-scale experiments have been undertaken to search for cosmic antimatter. 

The most perceptible experimental reason is the evident asymmetry of the Universe. The CP violation alone, on the level allowed by the Standard model, is not sufficient to explain the excess of matter in the Universe [18]. Finding a suitable extension of the Standard Model is not easy not only do the GUT theories tend to violate CPT invariance but they are also difficult to test. Specifically they can not be tested by means of the particle accelerator experiments, which so far have been very successful in extending our knowledge of Physics. This is because the GUT energy is some 1013 times larger than what we can now days produce in the most powerful accelerators. Consequently we must look for the low-energy manifestations of GUT and CPT invariance. Interestingly some possibilities for such tests lie within the realm of atomic and molecular physics.

At York University, Toronto, microwave measurements have been revived by Storry and Hessels [9,10], that could benefit of lasers to excite the 23P level, instead of the lamps used by Hughes and coworkers. Also, the detection of laser-induced fluorescence from 23P levels makes another basic difference with respect to Hughes experiments, which, together with a microwave frequency scan, eliminated the lineshape asymmetries. In this experiment, a moderate magnetic field is also used to select the transitions between the desidered Mj sublevels. The... 

It is inescapable that asymmetric forces must be operative during the synthesis of the first asymmetric natural products. What might these forces be I, for my part, think that they are cosmological. The universe is asymmetric and I am persuaded that life, as it is known to us, is a direct result of the asymmetry of the universe or of its indirect consequences.
