In a solid polymer electrolyte, such as used in the PEFC, ion mobility is a result of an electrolyte solution integrated into an inert polymer matrix. Early electrolyte membranes developed for the United States space program consisted of treated hydrocarbons, which resulted in poor longevity due to the relatively weaker hydrocarbon bonds [3]. Most modem solid electrolytes are perflourinated ionomers with a fixed side chain of sulphonic acid bonded covalently to the inert, but chemically stable, polymer polytetrafluoroethylene (FIFE) stracture. The last known naturally occurring case of smallpox occurred in Somalia in 1977. In May 1980, the World Health Assembly certified that the world was free of naturally occurring smallpox. By the 1960s, because of vaccination programs and quarantine regulations, the risk for importation of smallpox into the United States had been reduced. As a result, recommendations for routine smallpox vaccination were rescinded in 1971. In 1976, the recommendation for routine smallpox vaccination of health-care workers was also discontinued. In 1982, the only active licensed producer of vaccinia vaccine in the United States discontinued production for general use, and in 1983, distribution to the civilian population was discontinued. All military personnel continued to be vaccinated, but that practice ceased in 1990. Since January 1982, smallpox vaccination has not been required for international travelers, and International Certificates of Vaccination forms no longer include a space to record smallpox vaccination. [Pg.356]

The 30 speakers at the symposium included five persons from industry and 12 speakers from outside North America. Are my sources still current Although some famous experiments or studies have withstood the years, many controversial topics demand research as current as possible. What was written two years or or even two weeks ago may have been disproved or surpassed since, especially in our rapidly changing political world and ever-expanding fields of technology. A paper on the status of the U.S. space program, for example, demands recent sources, and research on personal computer use in the United States would be severely weakened by the use of a text published as recently as 1998 for current statistics. [Pg.383]
