The Pfizer group in the United Kingdom has been actively involved in the search for new Class III antiarrhythmic agents. It has patented a variety of structural types that make extensive use of the methylsulphonylamino moiety. These include indanes [173,174], pyridines [175,176], piperazines [177-179], benzazepines [180], bisarylalkylamines [181] and diazabicyclic compounds [182], From this extensive work, two compounds, UK-66914 (65) and UK-68798 (66), have entered clinical trials. In 1665, Robert Hooke examined thin slices of cork under his very simple microscope and discovered small, box-like spaces which he named cells. A few years later the Italian anatomist Marcello Malpighi described similar structures in animal tissues, which he called vesicles or utricles and, in 1672, the English botanist Nehemiah Grew published two extensively illustrated volumes greatly extending Hooke s findings. Other chapters in this book deal with the evolution of the legal controls over medicinal products and the structure of the European Union regulatory systems set up to authorise business activities and dealings in these products, and to enforce the rules and restrictions the law places upon them.
