Unexpected firing

Workers should put on clean clothes and socks and cut their nails short. Long trousers and long sleeved shirts must be worn. When the workers get used to such clothes, they are not uncomfortable even in summer. These clothes protect worker s skin from unexpected fire, and have saved many lives. Of course, these clothes are not fire resistant and if they do catch fire the flames must be quickly extinguished with water. Incombustible clothes of good quality for manufacturing fireworks have not been discovered yet and are not commonly used, but they may be introduced in the future. Workers should always take a towel in case unexpected injuries occur. Those working with red phosphorous should wear white coats. [Pg.297]

Unexpected firing. Sometimes this occurs suddenly and unexpectedly in a prepared mortar. This is caused by fire dust particles which fall into the mortar. It is necessary to cover the mouth of the mortar with a lid after it is loaded with the shell. [Pg.312]

Propane s natural odor is so faint that it can often not be detected when leaks occur. To avoid the problem of unexpected fires and... [Pg.665]

Although ethers are not particularly ha2ardous, their use involves risks of fire, toxic effects, and several unexpected reactions. [Pg.426]

This has often caused flammable liquids to turn up in some unexpected places. For example, construction had to be carried out next to a compound of small tanks. Sparks would fall onto the compound. Therefore all flammable liquids were removed from the tanks while the construction took place. Nevertheless a small fire occurred in the compound. [Pg.333]

For unexpected runaway or process overpressure not subject to external fire, the rupture disk set pressure, which is the bursting pressure, should be sufficiently higher than the expected under acceptable control conditions for the operation to avoid the frequent burst and shut... [Pg.451]

The mass loss rates for the boric acid samples were comparable to the untreated samples, despite a higher char yield (Table IX) for the treated samples. This was unexpected since the role of a wood fire retardant is to increase the char by increasing the dehydration reaction (1,3,7). Thus, a fire retardant treated sample will actually pyrolyze at a lower temperature. Data from Table III suggests that boric acid may form more char by suppressing formation of flammable volatiles instead of by increasing the dehydration rate. [Pg.357]

Storage vessels are usually located on tank farms. The space around a tank and the distances to other equipment depend on the materials stored, their potential hazardousness and the possibility of the unexpected changes in storage conditions. Fluid storages should be in a safe location away from process and public areas. It is also important to prevent fire spreading between tanks by keeping the level of heat radiation in an acceptable level (Mecklenburgh, 1985). [Pg.77]

A fire involving foam rubber mattresses in a storeroom led to an unexpected and serious explosion. Subsequent investigation showed that an explosion risk may exist when the flammable smoke and vapour from smouldering of large amounts of foam rubber are confined in an enclosed space. Suitable strict precautions are recommended [1], Methods of quantitatively evaluating potential fire hazards from release rates of heat, smoke and toxic gases from heated foam rubber and plastics materials were developed, and their application to real situations discussed [2],... [Pg.160]

Unexpected sources of ignition have led to many fires and explosions, usually in cases of leakage or spillage of flammable materials. Some examples are ... [Pg.201]

Nobody takes responsibility for the unexpected side-effects of technology no one has to account for their actions, pay compensation or suffer punishment when it is suddenly discovered that refrigerants have caused a hole in the ozone layer or that fire retardants are present in human breast milk and may be affecting the development of our children. There is a lack of responsibility as accountability. [Pg.142]

The benefits of large scale use of nitrogen as an inerting gas to prevent fire or explosion have been at the expense of many fatal asphyxiations arising from its accidental use in place of air or from its unexpected presence in confined spaces. At an oxygen concentration below 10%, collapse is almost instantaneous. Various... [Pg.1868]

The road block and sharp stop were unexpected the storm of gunfire, glass and blood in the enclosed confines of the car were enough to break even Trix s nerve in an instant. The hammer of boots on the bonnet and roof as someone vaulted swiftly up to fire on the car behind barely registered. Her heart was going ninety-to-the-dozen, her mind racing to catch up, as the Colonel shoved her head low, then shielded her with his own body. A warmer brand of surprise to counter the chill of shock. [Pg.42]

Draw and then color an original composition based on a holiday celebrated with nontraditional colors. Or, draw and then color a scene or a single object using atypical or unexpected colors (e.g., a green hamburger in a blue bun or a forest of blue and pink trees). Include a chemical change in each composition for example, a Fourth of July fireworks display or the forest of pink and blue trees on fire. [Pg.18]
