Clearly sickle cell disease is a major health concern in the United States. It is of course a far bigger concern in Africa where millions of individuals suffer because of a lack of resources and the historically low priority of sickle cell disease among pubhc health decision makers (13,18). In response to the seriousness of the problem in many developing nations, the World Health Organization and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) launched several initiatives to enhance coimnunity education and training of health care professionals in affected areas (18,19). 

The challenges that we face place an enormous responsibility on the education of our children. There is a need for education for sustainable development (ESD).
